The webcam-enabled ATM is just one of the methods banks are testing in their ever-evolving quest without losing customers is to trim their costs.Jeff Dudash, spokesman for ATM manufacturer NCR Corporation says “Banks are under a lot of pressure to make their branches profitable”. Next-generation ATMs not only let banks and credit unions cut down on the number of tellers needed at branches, they allow financial institutions to offer face-to-face services outside of regular business hours. Some of America’s biggest banks are experimenting with these high-tech ATMs , according to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal. Perhaps the most intriguing next-gen ATM is the model that essentially removes the “A” from the acronym. Recently, uGenius partnered with ATM maker NCR to add the personal teller element to its latest interactive machines, which can be installed almost anywhere—giving banks the possibility of offering live human customer service even if there isn’t a branch nearby. The company started selling what it calls “interactive teller” ATMs in March, and people can even open new accounts and originate loans as the machines are advanced enough and the company has signed on six banks already and credit unions, Dudash says.

Those six will probably have plenty of company in the future. Last year , Bank of America tested video tellers in four markets and is currently reviewing the results of its tests, says BofA spokeswoman Tara Burke.

Virtual colonoscopy, which uses CT scanning technology to take a non-invasive picture of the colon, is an attractive alternative to getting probed, but it still requires a pre-test laxative cleansing the night before the exam. The computer software that can digitally “cleanse” a virtual colonoscopy test of feces and leave behind only a relatively accurate picture of the colon wall and any potentially cancerous growths , researchers at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) says. No laxative, no probing and a high degree of accuracy.

Reluctance to undergo the bowel prep hinders more widespread testing for cancer and precancerous polyps. According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer screening rates hover around 50% in some states. Virtual colonoscopy without a day-long bowel prep beforehand could help remedy the problem.

“Laxative-free CT colonography has the potential to reach some of the unscreened population and save lives,” says Dr. Zalis, an associate professor of radiology at MGH and director of CT colonography at MGH Imaging.

The accuracy of the laxative-free exam is a promising sign that screening people may eventually not require the invasive, uncomfortable standard colonoscopy procedure. The participants in the study they agreed to undergo a virtual colonoscopy using the laxative-free method, as well as a standard, invasive colonoscopy several weeks later, and the researchers then compared the number of polyps labelled by each method even though they were not at especially high risk of developing colon cancer.

To prepare for the laxative-free screen, 605 men and women between ages 50 and 85 ate a low-fiber diet for two days prior to coming in for the virtual colonoscopy, and at the same time drank small amounts of contrast agent dissolved in their food or drink three times a day. Following the laxative-free CT-based colonoscopy, Zalis and his colleagues then applied software that they developed to analyze the scan and digitally remove the tagged elements, leaving behind a “cleansed” colon for radiologists to examine for suspicious lesions.

A laxative-free virtual colonoscopy has one disadvantage compared to the more invasive test , because the scope-based exam also includes instruments that allow doctors to remove suspicious growths as they see them, it serves as a screen and a treatment combined into one. If physicians see lesions on a virtual colonoscopy, the patient then needs to return for a scope-based colonoscopy to remove the lesions. About 85% of people getting screened for colon cancer have polyps that are smaller and not likely to be aggressive enough to warrant any action. These people can rely on virtual colonoscopy screening every five to 10 years and don’t need to go through the extensive preparation and expose themselves to the small risk of infection and perforation that probe-based colonoscopy carries.

Now, Zalis hopes that other research groups will validate his results. That would justify making the strategy available to more patients. Minus the laxative and discomfort of being probed with a scope, more people just might be willing to get screened.
