Grasshoppers Swarm Las Vegas

Swarms of grasshoppers invade Las Vegas Grasshoppers relax on a sidewalk outside the Las Vegas Sun offices in Henderson Nevada

A massive swarm of grasshoppers has been plaguing Las Vegas, Nevada with footage that makes it look like a scene from the Book of Exodus.

Millions of grasshoppers have descended on Las Vegas, causing alarming images and videos to spread on social media and prompting some tourists to panic.

"Some of you have been asking about the widespread radar returns the past few nights in Vegas", the NWS Las Vegas Twitter account wrote. A migration of mild-mannered grasshoppers sweeping through the Las Vegas area is being attributed to wet weather several months ago.

Lyft driver Jessica Palmore captured video of the insects at night flying above the iconic Luxor Hotel & Casino on Thursday and posted it on her Facebook page. "They'll move northward and they'll often move as far north as central Nevada".

"They're moving through", he said.

Experts say an invasion like this is tied to recent wet weather and has occurred five or six times over the past 30 years.

Unlike locusts, a devastating species that can clear huge swathes of vegetation in their path, these migratory pallid-winged grasshoppers are native to North America.

"Of course everything in Vegas, including us, is looking for shade, so that's why you'll see them in areas like this".

Though they have unsettled locals and may even seem like divine punishment, the grasshoppers are in fact the result of unique weather conditions.

Hordes of hungry grasshoppers, so vast they even show up on Doppler weather radar as clouds, are swarming the Nevada gambling mecca, KTNV reported.

The bugs are attracted to lights, specifically ultraviolet lights, Knight said.

Knight also says that the bugs probably won't cause much damage to residents' yards.

"It was insane. We didn't even want to walk through there". Knight explained that the grasshoppers do not pose a threat as they do not carry infection or bite.
