House Dems seek Mueller evidence to decide on impeachment

Robert Mueller Report

"Unless he complies with our accommodation efforts in very short order, we expect to file an additional suit to enforce our subpoena for his testimony and that will be next week, or earlier next week".

"I worry equally about the message of taking an impeachment case to trial, losing that case, having the president acquitted, and then having an adjudication that this conduct is not impeachable", he said.

Despite not being limited to impeachment, Nadler and several of his fellow Judiciary Democrats confirmed during a press conference Wednesday that their investigation has reached a point where they are considering whether to draft articles of impeachment against the president.

According to a Hill-HarrisX poll from late-May, only 35% of registered voters believed that the Democrats should "begin impeachment proceedings", while 45% stated that they did not believe impeachment proceedings should be initiated. "Sometimes the Judiciary Committee has done it on its own", he said, adding that "impeachment isn't a binary process".

Democrats are anxious that time is running short on the window for impeachment with the 2020 campaign season around the corner, and the court cases could take weeks - if not months or years - to reach a resolution and litigate appeals.

Schiff comments come days after Pelosi insisted to reporters that she was not trying to "run out the clock" for impeaching Trump, but that she was waiting until all information had been gathered and once that happened a "decision will be made in a timely fashion". "Don't give up. Don't let that man get away with this".

"He's got the smallest, thinnest neck I've ever seen", Trump crowed.

Mueller submitted his report in March and it was published in redacted form in April, after attorney general William Barr issued a summary of its contents which Democrats said was misleading.

Trump said later Friday that "all they want to do is impede".

The House is now fighting a number of other court battles with Trump and his administration, including their efforts to obtain the President's tax returns and subpoena his banks and accounting firms.

A senior lawmaker in the U.S. House of Representatives on Sunday rejected the notion that Democrats must decide whether to pursue the impeachment of Republican President Donald Trump before the 2020 election season shifts into high gear.

The committee is preparing to petition a federal judge for access to the secret grand jury material given to Mueller and his investigators.

Democrats argue they are entitled to the grand jury material because the law allows a judge to share grand information "preliminary to or in connection with a judicial proceeding".

Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), appearing on CNN's "State of the Union," said Trump "has done many impeachable offenses, he's violated the law six ways from Sunday".

Pelosi and Nadler have so far resisted the pressure from within their party to open an inquiry.
