Bison at Yellowstone National Park charges 9-year-old girl Tom Kackley

Bison Yellowstone National Park

She was treated at Old Faithful Clinic and later released, CNN reports. After the incident, Yellowstone staff issued a notice reminding park visitors to maintain safe distances from wildlife.

A group of approximately 50 people were within 5-10 feet of bison for at least 20 minutes before eventually causing the bison to charge. "We saw through the trees some people petting the bison, super close".

Dayton went on to say that she was filming the bison grazing when she inadvertently captured the attack on the girl.

Following Monday's attack, park "officials stressed that people should stay at least 25 yards, or 75 feet, away from bison and other large animals such as elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose and coyotes", The Washington Post reported. "There were a bunch of kids crying".

She was filming the bull eating when she said it charged at the girl who was walking down a nearby path with her family.

Park officials did not disclose the extent of any injuries.

While park officials say the matter is still under investigation, the statement notes that wildlife in the park should be given plenty of space to avoid any unsafe confrontations.

Males - also known as bulls - can weigh up to 2,000lbs while females, or cows, can weigh up to 1,000lb. "Bison are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans", warns Yellowstone's website.

Despite the presence of seemingly more unsafe animals such as bears and wolves, bison have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other creature, the NPS said.
