Manitoba Museum marks Apollo 11 moon landing with space party

United States astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Mike Collins and the family of Neil Armstrong, the first person to have set foot on the moon, were invited by Trump to the Oval Office to celebrate the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969. "But in the Artemis program we go to the moon sustainably, and this time we have a very diverse, highly qualified astronaut corps that includes women".

"While Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were on the surface, ex-fighter pilot Collins remained in lunar orbit where he was in touch with ground control, providing them updates on his position".

In a speech at the Kennedy Space Center July 20, Vice President Mike Pence, flanked by the Orion spacecraft being built for the Artemis 1 uncrewed mission, said that assembly of the spacecraft was now "complete" and ready for final testing.

Last year, a checklist that traveled to the surface of the Moon with Armstrong and Aldrin sold at auction in NY for $62,500.

In addition to a full slate of nationwide events that even included a spectacular nighttime projection of the Saturn V rocket on the Washington Monument (seen above), NASA commemorated the Apollo 11 launch with a new video that adds some flair to the original 1969 countdown. Morgan explained in a NASA interview that Apollo 11, and now his flight, represents "an accomplishment of the world and not one single country". We've always gone over the horizon to the next thing.

ESA's rover will "scout the terrain in preparation for the future arrival of astronauts, and deliver lunar samples to Earth", the agency said. "Is that a possibility?" the Republican president asked Bridenstine during an event in the White House Oval Office.

"Out there was this little pea about the size of your thumbnail at arm's length: blue, white, very shiny, you get the blue of the oceans, white of the clouds, streaks of rust we call continents, such a attractive gorgeous tiny thing, nestled into this black velvet of the rest of the universe". And of course, the gift shop does have commemorative merchandise to celebrate the first moon landing. Bridenstine said he would do so.

But Trump is not the first president to make such promises: 30 years ago today, in 1989, the late president George HW Bush pledged to create a permanent base on the Moon and then send a crewed mission to Mars.

Collins, though, chimed in that he supported the idea of "Mars direct", referring going directly to Mars without first returning to the Moon.
