NASA TV rebroadcasts Apollo 11 liftoff on 50th anniversary

Apollo 15 astronaut Al Worden left discusses his book

In a contingency speech written nearly exactly 50 years ago for President Richard Nixon, titled 'IN EVENT OF MOON DISASTER, ' speechwriter William Safire opined on the hypothetical loss of the astronauts. He had said in the interview that Armstrong and his colleagues faced a daunting challenge in returning the module to orbit, reported Live Science.

"I'm proud of it, that's the best I can say right now", Morris said " I mean, how many people can say that they had a portion or even a teeny bit, of contribution in getting men to the moon and back safely?" George didn't know the contents of the tapes for decades, and didn't think they included anything of value.

"Others will follow, and surely find their way home".

In his memoir, Failure Is Not an Option: Mission Control From Mercury to Apollo 13 and Beyond, Kranz describes his role during numerous most famous spaceflights in history.

Safire noted that following the sombre address, the president had planned to give a modified burial to the astronauts at sea in a public ritual that commended their souls to "the deepest depths". If stranded, they could have starved or committed suicide. But these men were the first, and they will remain the foremost in our hearts, ' reads the speech.

The night before their ascent into space, Apollo 11's three astronauts appeared calm, laughing and joking while sharing dinner with a large group.

The instrument will be carried to the Moon in 2021 by a commercially-provided lander as part of NASA's Artemis program, and are helping develop the PROSPECT Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer (PITMS).

On July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying its crew to the Moon and into history.

NASA invited Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins to the Kennedy Space Centre's Launch Complex 39A to mark the anniversary.

The Apollo 11 was also the fifth manned flight of the command and service modules in the series and the third flight of a lunar module, which Armstrong and Aldrin used to get to the moon's surface.

Apollo 13 was to be the third mission to land on the moon, but just under 56 hours into flight, an oxygen tank explosion forced the crew to cancel the lunar landing and move into the Aquarius lunar module to return back to Earth.

The 50th anniversary of the moon landing is coming up this Saturday and there are plenty of cool events going on around the country.

The bill also contains a sense of Congress that the US should negotiate a binding global agreement to protect the Apollo 11 landing site and similar sites.
