Three-year-old boy dies after falling into a NY restaurant grease trap

Tears and questions after 3-year-old dies in Tim Hortons grease trap

Francis Camp, a police investigator, said the boy fell through a plastic lid installed in the ground behind a Tim Hortons restaurant, the Democrat & Chronicle reports.

Witnesses removed the child from the grease trap and administered CPR until first responders arrived. He called the incident an "unspeakable tragedy".

A 3-year-old child died after falling into a grease trap at a Tim Hortons in Rochester, New York, said the police department. But moments later, they received another call that the child was found and had fallen into a grease trap behind the location. The trap was embedded in the ground covered by a plastic lid. The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital.

"No one ever wants to see anything like this", Camp said, saying it is the "number one" worst thing his officers ever have to deal with. Investigator Frank Camp said the child walked by the hole, then went back to it and got on top of the lid where it flipped open and the child fell in. Restaurant grease traps are created to keep used oil and grease out of sewer systems, but are not always properly sealed.

"What occurred today was a tragedy and on behalf of the Tim Hortons family, we offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the young boy who passed away. As there is an ongoing police investigation, we have no further comment at this time".

The grease trap is 2 1/2 feet in diameter, according to police. "We have a horrifying episode that happened here today", he added.

A 3-year-old child died in Auburn, Alabama, after falling into a grease pit in October 2017 while on a family outing at an ice cream shop.

Footage captured by CNN Monday showed distraught Tim Hortons employees pacing in the Rochester parking lot behind yellow police tape.
