Parliament elects #UrsulaVonDerLeyen as first female Commission President

Empty Promises? Ursula Von Der Leyen Would Support Brexit Extension

Meanwhile, Brexit Party MEP Nigel Farage - who clashed with the Commission President-elect earlier in the day - said "Ursula von der Leyen has scraped in by nine votes" claiming she has "power but no legitimacy".

A fluent English and French speaker, she has however built a solid network of allies across Europe, crucially including French President Emmanuel Macron, and launched a strong charm offensive in recent days.

"Exactly 40 years ago, the first president of the European parliament, Simone Veil, was elected and presented her vision of a united Europe", Von der Leyen said.

The 60-year-old ex-defence minister will replace Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the European Commission after the vote in Strasbourg assembly.

Eastern countries like Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic have so far refrained from issuing such a pledge amid concerns about financing their transition away from their dependence on coal and fossil fuels.

Her selection has angered some MEPs because the so-called Spitzenkandidat process, where they put forward a candidate from each political grouping for the job, was overlooked by the leaders of the 28 member states.

She said she would set up a climate division within the European Investment Bank to "unlock one trillion Euros of investment over the next decade". A total of 327 lawmakers voted against her and 22 abstained.

"At the first look, Ursula von der Leyen has a strong global profile and having served in different German governments knows politics and policies in Brussels very well", Miriam Hartlett-Zugehor, professor of political science at the Free University of Berlin, told Al Jazeera in a recent interview.

Germany's Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen is welcomed by Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel prior to a meeting at the Egmont Palace in Brussels, Monday July 8, 2019.

The liberal group Renew Europe and the Socialists and Democrats Group had earlier announced support for the 60-year-old, who this week resigned as German defense minister, regardless of the European Union lawmakers' decision.

Ms Von der Leyen also said she would be willing to allow for a further Brexit extension "should time be required for good reason".

In a hard-hitting paper handed out in Brussels, the SPD listed reasons they deemed von der Leyen "an inadequate and unsuitable candidate", among them Germany's poor military preparedness and past accusations of plagiarism in her doctoral dissertation.

Von der Leyen's letters also sketch out how she would seek to secure support from member states for the new target, putting forward proposals for a wide-ranging decarbonisation package that would include the creation of a new "Just Transition Fund" to help more carbon intensive regions and industries decarbonise.

As the second largest political group after the centre-right European People's Party (EPP), the S&D represents 154 votes.

Ms von der Leyen would become the first woman to lead the EU's executive.

The European Parliament will hold committee hearings in September to grill commissioner nominees, such as Ireland's Phil Hogan, and judge if they are up to the task.

MEPs then vote on the entire commission.

"As I listened to Ursula von der Leyen, I have to say that there is no real difference between her and Timmermans".

Conversely, she also obtained support from what could be described as the opposite camp.
