Facing calls for resignation, Acosta defends Epstein deal

Jeffrey Epstein

The New York indictment accuses Epstein of abusing dozens of underage girls at homes in Manhattan and Palm Beach, Fla., from 2002 to 2005.

The Justice Department disclosed the review into Acosta earlier this year after Republican U.S. Senator Ben Sasse raised concerns about the handling of the Epstein case with then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, according to a person familiar with their conversation. They deserve their day in court.

Along the way, he became friends with numerous prominent people - including, just to name a few, former President Bill Clinton, future President Donald Trump, Great Britain's Prince Andrew, George Stephanopoulos, Katie Couric, Woody Allen, Kevin Spacey, and Les Wegner, the owner of Victoria's Secret.

Trump reportedly spent time with Epstein off-and-on throughout the the late 1990s and 2000s.

By 2007, Epstein was facing a potential federal indictment for sexually abusing dozens of girls between 1999 and 2007, directing others to abuse them, and paying employees to bring victims to him, according to court filings.

Eleven years after letting Jeffrey Epstein off lightly with a once-secret plea deal, the USA government is taking another run at putting the wealthy businessman behind bars with new sex-trafficking charges that law enforcement officials say involve allegations dating to the early 2000s.

Epstein will remain in jail until at least July 15, when a judge has scheduled a bail hearing. On Monday, Weingarten told the court that the government is "seeking two bites at the apple", adding that "for due process reasons, double jeopardy reasons, we don't think that will stand".

During a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Acosta further defended how he handled Epstein and expressed satisfaction that NY prosecutors had filed additional charges. Trump praised him as "an wonderful Secretary of Labor" on the White Dwelling on Tuesday.

"I have read too much information, and I have spoken to too many people on the inside", Sarnoff responded, noting she attempted to interview Clinton in the past. "It's miles even said that he likes stunning girls as remarkable as I maintain, and a lot of them are on the youthful aspect. No doubt about it - Jeffrey enjoys his social life".

The defense team says the federal charges should be dismissed in light of a once-secret agreement that allowed Epstein to avoid a potentially lengthy prison sentence- a case involving almost identical allegations of Epstein sexually abusing underage girls. The labor secretary has come under fire for a plea deal he negotiated with Jeffrey Epstein that allowed Epstein out of prison six days a week during his 13-month sentence. In his previous role, Acosta gave billionaire pedophile and alleged child rapist Jeffrey Epstein a plea deal so lenient it straight-up violated the law.

Dershowitz (left) was implicated in Epstein's alleged sex-trafficking scandal when one of the victims, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, alleged that she was held as a sex slave and loaned out to the famed attorney.

Epstein pleaded not guilty on Monday to two counts: sex trafficking conspiracy and sex trafficking.

His lawyers argued that the matter had been settled in 2008 with a plea agreement in Florida involving similar allegations.

Meanwhile, prosecutors stated that hundreds, possibly thousands, of "sexually suggestive" photographs of nude underage girls have been seized from Jeffrey Epstein's New York City mansion as part of an ongoing investigation into the sexual misconduct allegations brought against the financier. Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta, who was Miami U.S. attorney when the plea deal was reached, also offered support for the new charges.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Labor on Sunday declined to comment on Epstein's arrest.

"I'm sure you've come prepared to justify this cut to us but it doesn't go unnoticed that this isn't the first time that you've ignored human trafficking", Clark said.

Politico had reported earlier that Mulvaney was privately urging Trump to dump Acosta.

Attorney for the Southern District of New York Geoffrey Berman announces charges against Jeffery Epstein.

The non-prosecution agreement, examined in detail in a series of stories in The Miami Herald, is being challenged in federal court in Florida.
