HK students reject Lam's offer of talks, East Asia News & Top Stories

"We do not want it to be just a public relations stunt", Jacky So Tsun-fung, president of Chinese University's student union, told local media, reported SCMP. I am so distressed for them.

Mass rallies erupted in Hong Kong in early June as the authorities were considering adopting a bill that would allow the autonomous Chinese city to extradite suspects to jurisdictions which it did not have an extradition agreement with, including mainland China. We want to keep our journalism open and accessible and be able to keep providing you with news and analysis from the frontlines of Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish World.

The protesters are still adamant that the bill must be fully withdrawn and demanded pro-Beijing Chief Executive Carrie Lam's resignation.

A spokesperson for Lam, in an emailed statement, said the leader had "recently started inviting young people of different backgrounds for a meeting, including university students and young people who have participated in recent protests".

Protesters stormed Hong Kong's legislature on July 1, the 22nd anniversary of the former British colony's return to China.

Protesters put up a sign reading "Protect my Hong Kong; Freedom, human rights", after breaking into the parliament chambers of the government headquarters in Hong Kong on July 1, 2019.

Angeline Chan of Hong Kong Progressive Lawyers Group (PLG), one of the protesting groups, told Anadolu Agency by phone from Hong Kong: "The students rejected the closed-door meeting offer made by Lam last evening".

However, the student council at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) turned down Lam-led government offer, stating she had called for closed-door dialogues, according to Reuters news reports.

"We will only consider it after the government addresses our demands", he added.

He urged the government to take the initiative and listen sincerely to the people's "voices and aspirations". They think a democratically elected government would be more responsive to their needs than one chosen by pro-Beijing elites who benefit from the economic ties to the mainland.

Student leaders called Lam's invitation "insincere" and a "public relations act".

Students there repeated the opposition's request in recent weeks to investigate alleged police brutality against protesters, whom they said Lam should stop labelling "rioters".

Hong Kong returned to China under a "one country, two systems" formula that allows freedoms not enjoyed in mainland China, including freedom to protest and a much-cherished independent judiciary.
