Former Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi suffers stroke

ESPN NFL analyst and former New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi suffered a stroke on Thursday

Former NFL linebacker Tedy Bruschi has suffered another stroke, his charity announced Friday afternoon.

"Tedy has the complete support of ESPN and we wish him a speedy recovery", the network said in a statement.

The first stroke occurred in February 2005, just a few weeks after leading the New England Patriots to their third Super Bowl title. "He recognized the warning signs immediately: arm weakness, face drooping and speech difficulties".

Bruschi was found to have a heart defect that required him to undergo a surgical procedure to fix a hole, forcing him to sit out the start of the 2005 campaign.

In a statement to ESPN, his family confirmed on Friday that the three-time Super Bowl champion, 46, was recovering well following his stroke. "And I'm very proud of that".

After retiring from the NFL, Bruschi became an ESPN analyst.

According to the American Stroke Association, TIA stands for transient ischemic attack and is considered a mini-stroke but also a "major warning" that can foreshadow a full-blown stroke.

While some former National Football League players have fallen out of shape in retirement, Bruschi, a Pro Bowl selection in 2004, took up distance running and has completed the Boston Marathon three times - most recently back in April. He was drafted by New England in 1996. He has twice run in the Boston Marathon since leaving the NFL.
