As of July 1, mosquitoes in Elkhart and Clark counties have tested positive for West Nile.

The Marion County Public Health Department reported on Tuesday that the first mosquitoes of the season in Marion County have tested positive for the West Nile virus.

A department spokesman said it's the second straight year where the first case is earlier than usual.

"Dumping out standing water on your property goes a long way toward reducing mosquito bites by limiting where they grow".

Officials say the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship State Veterinarian Dr. Jeff Kaisand has confirmed the cases and they have been detected in horses living in Iowa.
