Tanks arrive in DC ahead of July 4 celebration

Fourth of July celebrations in D.C. are going to look a lot different this year

US battle tanks were spotted on a cargo train in Washington on Tuesday morning, a sign of the military firepower that will be featured as part of a July Fourth celebration that will differ significantly from past events.

The M1A1 tanks and other military hardware are said to be guarded by military police and arrived Monday via freight train from Georgia's Fort Stewart. And I'm going to be here and I'm going to say a few words and we're going to have planes going overhead--the best fighter jets in the world and other planes too.

The military display is all part of the "Salute to America" event that Trump is putting on this Thursday.

At least two M1A1 Abrams tanks and two Bradley Fighting Vehicles were spotted on rail transporters at the south-eastern edge of the capital.

WASHINGTON-President Donald Trump said he plans to display battle tanks on Washington's National Mall as part of a pumped-up Fourth of July celebration that will also feature flyovers by fighter jets and other displays of military prowess.

"This is going to be a fantastic Fourth of July with increased access across the National Mall for the public to enjoy music, flyovers, a spectacular fireworks display, and an address by our Commander-in-Chief", Interior Secretary David Bernhardt said in a release. Brand-new. And we're very proud of it.

But Mr Trump's plans for a military display on Veterans Day in November a year ago were torpedoed after defence officials said it would cost about $92m - more than three times the original estimate.

However, the poll also showed that only 20% had heard much about Trump's plans.

The tanks weigh 60 tons - or more.

Americans "shouldn't be lured by the trappings or the spectacle or the rhetoric of Mr. Trump", the board said, instead suggesting they should "claim the day for values embraced by the founders: freedom, tolerance and respect for all".

"You've got to be pretty careful with the tanks because the roads have a tendency not to like to carry heavy tanks", Trump said Monday.

Trump is turning a day about the country into a day about himself, not that that should surprise anyone.

The tanks are now on a train outside of southeast D.C., according to local reports.

A VIP section set up near the Lincoln Memorial will be open to government officials and lawmakers, according to a White House official speaking on condition of anonymity.

"And we're going to have some tanks stationed outside".

This includes a demonstration by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.

He offered no specifics on where the vehicles would be located for the July 4 celebrations.

"We urge that the decisions the administration makes in regard to any heavy artillery are responsible ones, because many areas of the mall are not designed for tanks and face the potential for significant damage", said John Garder, the organization's senior director of budget and appropriations.

Amanda Yanchury, a spokeswoman for Interior-Environment Appropriations Subcommittee Chair Betty McCollum (D-Minn.), said in an email that McCollum "takes her oversight responsibilities seriously and will exercise her role as chair to get a full accounting of the taxpayer costs incurred by this event". Trump formally announced his bid for re-election in June.
