Student debt elimination 'immoral,' unfair to hardworking taxpayers: Republican lawmaker

The Vermont senator and Democratic presidential candidate unveiled a plan on Monday that would have the USA government pay to entirely eliminate the $1.6 trillion in student debt held by 45 million Americans.

"We are entering a proposal which will allow every person in this country to get all of the education that they need to live out their dreams because they are Americans", Sanders said during a press conference.

Other 2020 Democratic presidential candidates were prodded to weigh in. Gene Davis, D-Salt Lake City, said he believes Biden's politics are more appealing to Utah voters than those of the party's more progressive candidates, such as Warren and Vermont Sen. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash.

"This is just a chance to be able to talk to people all across this country about how this government works better and better and better for a thinner and thinner slice at the top, and it's just not working for the rest of America", she said.

The proposal would make two- and four-year public and tribal colleges and universities tuition-free and debt-free, and erase the roughly $1.6 trillion in student loan debt now owed in the United States, paid for by a tax on Wall Street. But if the free college and student debt relief advocates don't hit their revenue goals, they could simply add to the deficit - as President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans have by passing more than $1 trillion in tax cuts without paying for them.

During his 2016 presidential run, Mr Sanders also championed a tuition-free public institution plan, but this legislation goes further. Warren has proposed $640 billion in student loan cancellation, including up to $50,000 in debt for people earning under $100,000.

"What we have is a requirement that they have both to introduce themselves and also make a splash", said Zelden.

The proposal is the latest from a Democratic presidential candidate that aims to tackle the growing problem of student debt, which has been blamed for blunting the economic prospects of million of Americans. Sen.

In proposing a massive bailout of college debtors, along with free public college tuition, Sanders is positioning himself firmly to the left in the increasingly competitive Democratic presidential contest, in which the cost of college has become a major issue.

His $1.6tn plan is as costly as it is ambitious. It could also instigate a debate over whether erasing the student debt of more affluent Americans is an effective use of taxpayer dollars.

Who is moderating the first Democratic debates? This is his play.

The candidates debating on June 27 are Michael Bennet, Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, John Hickenlooper, Bernie Sanders, Eric Swalwell, Marianne Williamson, and Andrew Yang.

In other developments on the campaign trail, Mr Biden on Monday published an opinion piece on immigration in the Miami Herald newspaper.

Twenty of the roughly two-dozen Democratic candidates made the cut for the first debates in Miami, a two-day affair starting Wednesday night when the first batch of 10 contenders face off.
