This Indian City Has Run Out Of Water Amid A Scorching Summer

Chennai in crisis as authorities blamed for dire water shortage

"The government is not even acknowledging that there is a water crisis", said DMK's Saravanan Annadurai to CNN.

Chennai Metro Water supplies only 525 million litres per day, way less than the 800 million litres required.

All four reservoirs that supply Chennai, known as the Detroit of south Asia for its flourishing automobile industry, have run dry this summer, largely because of poor monsoon rains a year ago.

Earlier, at a meeting that he chaired in the Secretariat to take stock of the water situation in the state, Palaniswami ordered allocation of Rs 200 crore for drinking water schemes in Tamil Nadu. However, a press release quoted the CM as having said the measure would last six weeks.

John said there is no immediate hope for rains to end the crisis, with the monsoon not expected before October. There were many visitors to the residences of Chief Minister and other Ministers, he said.

In response to the ongoing crisis in Tamil Nadu, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) opposition party is calling for state-wide protests on June 22. "Luckily we have our own borewell for our water supply but even that seems to be drying up", said Naseem Sheikh, the manager of the Marina chain of restaurants in Chennai.

M. Senthilsaravanan, another hotel owner and resident, said: "In (the) Chennai area, hotels and restaurants have shut down because we are not getting sufficient water and there is high demand".

The well water can be used for washing, but residents have to buy bottled drinking water, and not everyone can afford it.

Residents have had to stand in line for hours to get water from government tanks.

Use of private tankers to provide water are mostly inaccessible to those living in the city's slums.

In 2015, a similar situation arose here with continuously lacking rain for 191 days in the capital Chennai. With a deficient monsoon in 2018, the state's reservoirs are dried up. Water levels in the city's four main reservoirs have fallen to some of their lowest levels in decades.

Apart from the violence, the water crisis has also hit the functioning of several industries, especially in Chennai.

Water was being supplied through lorries and borewells are being dug wherever the water problem prevails, he added. People are having to wash utensils in the same dirty water, saving a few bottles of clean water to cook food. Some rain has been reported in Chennai on Thursday. 'We have really rationed water use and have enough, for the moment, for the ward toilets and the toilets in OPD (the out-patient department) but it's becoming alarming, said Dr Prabhu Manickam, an orthopaedic surgeon at the hospital. Tamil Nadu is facing acute water shortage this summer. "If we already have water problems now, how am I going to make sure that she has water to drink tomorrow?"

Meanwhile, the status report has exposed lack of preparedness on the state government's part to handle the water crisis.
