McLaren F1 successor to be manufactured in new Surrey facility

The man behind the iconic McLaren F1 is back with a new T.50 supercar

One of the most interesting differences between the F1 and the T.50 comes in the way they use active aerodynamics.

Check out the press release section below for even more details.

Under the body of the T.50 Murray will hide a naturally-aspirated 3.9-liter V12 engine built by Cosworth.

It'll be paired with a bespoke, six-speed transmission. "I designed the F1 as a sort of super GT vehicle - absolutely road-focused with no plan to go racing, which is why the auto set new standards for packaging and luggage space", Murray explains. The overall weight of the driver-focused supercar is just 980 kg thanks to a focus on minimizing the weight of every component, including a unique carbon fiber tub.

It will be powered by a compact and light, naturally-aspirated, all-new V12 engine. So what will the T.50 cost?

Deliveries are set to begin in early 2022 and the base price set at $2.5 million before taxes. The braking system, also provided by Xtrac, combines lightweight alloy calipers and carbon-ceramic discs for effective stopping power.

That said, it doesn't sound like the T.50 will merely be a shell in which to transport what sounds like a sensational V12.

Uniquely, the supercar will feature a 400mm ground-effect fan, similar to that on Murray's famous Brabham BT46B Formula One "Fan Car".

"Just as with the F1, we have no specific targets for acceleration, top speed or lap times", Murray said. Weight is the key to Murray's auto design ethos (anyone remember the LCC Rocket?), with every "unproductive gram" shaved off the vehicle.

The T.50's 3.9-litre engine is extremely small and light for a V12.

The more visible parts of the exterior will do without wings, outlets, vents, or bulges, then, because the underside is doing the heavy lifting. The kids who knew a bit more about supercars would probably have scale models of a Buggati EB110, a Porsche 959, or a Jaguar XJ220, but then when you ask the most astute enthusiast of the day they would tell you that the 90's was truly ruled by one vehicle: The McLaren F1. Despite the car's performance capabilities, it is far from a stripped-back racer.

It will be manufactured in the United Kingdom by Gordon Murray Automotive - a new company first announced in late 2017 at the One Formula exhibition.

The central driving position provides a ideal "jet-fighter-style" visibility, while analogue instruments and driver-centric controls are positioned to provide an even more intuitive and immersive driving experience than the acclaimed F1.

Murray's preference for a central driver's seat, with a passenger seat on either side, gets full expression in the T.50, whose credentials as "the last great analogue supercar" are stressed by its traditionally styled analogue instruments and switches, dominated by a large central tachometer. "Also, driver-selectable engine maps ensure a driving mode to suit every situation". "It was absolutely road-focused and we had no plan to go racing, which is why it set new standards for packaging and road space". Murray has designed the T.50 with the same aims in mind, noting that it betters the F1 for luggage capacity, ease of entry and exit, and maintenance. You'll need to place your order fast though, as Murray has been canvassing customers since 2017 and there's only 100 build slots to book.
