United States extends nuclear waivers for Iran

A year after US nuclear pullout Iran grapples with sanctions

The administration of US President Donald Trump on Friday imposed sanctions on Iran's export of enriched uranium but at the same time renewed three key waivers that will allow its European allies, Russian Federation and China to cooperate with the Islamic Republic on civil nuclear program.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the United States would impose sanctions on anyone involved in the trade of natural for enriched uranium - as well as in the storage of Iranian heavy water that was in excess of limits.

"Iran must stop all proliferation-sensitive activities, including uranium enrichment, and we will not accept actions that support the continuation of such enrichment".

Iranian parliament speaker Ali Larijani was quoted as saying on Saturday that Iran will continue uranium enrichment under its nuclear deal with world powers despite a U.S. move to stop it.

"The important point for us is that we all reject the USA secondary sanctions and see them as unacceptable", Fars quoted Scholz as saying in a meeting with the Iranian commercial officials in the southern province of Fars.

In pulling out of the JCPOA, Trump said the terms were not tough enough to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, and he accused Tehran of violating the "spirit" of the accord by financing Islamic militants in the region.

In its 14 reports, the International Atomic Energy Agency concluded that Iran has abided by the JCPOA, contrary to the views of the Trump administration. "Together, we emphasise our continued commitment to the JCPoA, a crucial element of the global nuclear non-proliferation regime and essential for our national and shared European security".

The EU and the European powers also on May 4 said they took note "with regret and concern of the decision by the United States not to extend waivers with regards to trade in oil with Iran".

At the same time, Pompeo renewed waivers of United States sanctions allowing Russia, China and European countries to pursue cooperation programs created to prevent Iran from reactivating a defunct nuclear weapons program.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said live on television on Saturday that Iran must counter U.S. sanctions by continuing to export its oil as well as boosting non-oil exports.

"America is trying to decrease our foreign reserves".

"The sanctions mean Iran will lose its main source of revenue and hence, more pressure on the country's budget".

After Washington re-imposed sanctions on Tehran in November previous year, the USA government granted eight countries six-months waivers to keep buying Iranian crude. The waivers permit work at several Iranian nuclear sites to continue without United States penalties. It also blacklisted Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard Corps.
