Rep. Nadler Threatens to Hold Barr in Contempt

Hillary Clinton Lindsey Graham

So I don't know if Chris Wallace has information that I don't have, but that he is saying that Barr is perpetuating a lie about this conversation between him and Mueller?

"He lied to Congress". Pelosi said Thursday "the attorney general of the United States was not telling the truth to the Congress of the United States - that's a crime".

"Nobody is above the law". But he said in the ABC interview that "my job in the meantime is to make sure he's not back as president of the United States of America".

"President Trump says, "I won't let him testify" - it's not for President Trump to decide whether he will let a witness testify, now a private citizen, before a house of Congress", he said.

Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec called Ms Pelosi's allegation "reckless, irresponsible and false".

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., warned on Thursday that President Donald Trump is "trying to render Congress inert as a separate and coequal branch of government". That could potentially lead to fines or imprisonment for the top USA law-enforcement official.

Republicans in Congress have also dismissed Nadler's efforts as political theater meant to satisfy a progressive voter base that helped give Democrats control of the House of Representatives in last year's midterm election. Mr Nixon resigned in 1974.

Last week, Trump and his business sued Democratic House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings to block a subpoena seeking information from an accounting firm about Trump's finances. Barr said Wednesday his goal had been simply to release the report's bottom-line conclusions as he readied the entire document for release.

Just before Barr's testimony on Wednesday, reports surfaced that Mueller sent Barr a letter complaining that Barr's summary of his report did not "fully capture the context, nature and substance" of his investigation. Before Mueller filed his report, it was possible to imagine the president being brought to justice.

Nadler threatened Barr with a contempt vote if he doesn't comply. Mr Nadler said he would move forward with a contempt citation as soon as Monday.

Harris then questioned on Barr's March 24 summary of the Mueller report, asking if he personally reviewed all of the underlying evidence.

"Do you know what they're referencing with that?", he asked Barr.

Barr was questioned after a letter written by Mueller surfaced that criticized the way the attorney general handled the public release of the special counsel's report, The Washington Post reported.

Barr testified this week that he subsequently called Mueller to ask about his concerns and that Mueller did not find Barr's letter to be inaccurate.

Representative Doug Collins, the House Judiciary Committee's top Republican, said Mr Barr did not appear before that panel because Mr Nadler had insisted on an aggressive format with an extra hour of questioning from its own lawyers, in addition to those from the committee's lawmakers.

The president's stonewalling has made some Democrats willing to consider impeachment proceedings, which party leaders have repeatedly said they oppose for now. His 448-page report unearthed many links between Russians and Trump's campaign, but concluded there was insufficient evidence to establish a criminal conspiracy between the campaign and Moscow. The report also detailed a series of actions Mr Trump took to try to impede the investigation.
