Military truck runs over protesters in Venezuela amid political unrest

A video broadcast on Juan Guaidó's social media account appeared to be filmed at a military base in Caracas

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido has taken to the streets with detained activist Leopoldo Lopez and a small contingent of heavily armed soldiers in a military uprising.

He appeared in a video with uniformed men, saying he had military support.

"What was going to happen, we were told, was that they would announce their support for the constitution", he told reporters at the State Department. Other clashes took place at similar demonstrations across the country.

The early-morning rebellion seems to have only limited military support.

The petitions for asylum came as Bolsonaro threw his support behind Venezuelans "enslaved by a dictator", a reference to President Nicolas Maduro whom Guaido is challenging for power.

Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino on Twitter rejected what he called an attempt by a "subversive movement" to generate "panic and terror". He condemned Guaido's move to seize power as a "terrorist" act and said that it was bound to fail. Mr Lopez, seen as Mr Guaido's political mentor, stood behind.

As the two were speaking, troops loyal to Maduro fired tear gas from inside the air base.

A crowd that quickly swelled to a few thousand scurried for cover, reappearing later with Guaido at a plaza a few blocks from the disturbances.

However, late Tuesday, he sought refuge with his family in the Chilean Embassy in Caracas, a discouraging sign for supporters of the uprising.

Guaido had declared himself the country's interim president in January.

Pompeo said that the United States government was "committed to creating democracy here in the Western Hemisphere" and that Venezuela faced "the singularly worst humanitarian crisis, absent conflict, absent war, in the history of the world". Food and medicine shortages are severe. The White House tweeted a video showing Venezuelan military vehicle appearing to hit protestors with the caption "This is the corrupt, illegitimate Maduro Regime".

He said the situation is reaching a "crescendo" and hopefully it will end quickly with Guaido in the presidential palace.

"(Prosecutors) will launch criminal prosecutions for the serious crimes that have been committed against the constitution, the rule of law and the right to peace". We want to keep our journalism open and accessible and be able to keep providing you with news and analysis from the frontlines of Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish World. "America will stand with you until freedom and democracy are restored".

He added: "Today as the caretaker president of Venezuela, as the legitimate commander-in-chief of the armed forces, I call on all soldiers, the military family, to accompany us in this mission".

Several hundred soldiers have defected and left the country for Brazil or Colombia in recent weeks but not in numbers high enough to threaten Maduro's grip. Caty Weaver was the editor.

"The hour has arrived for us to look for other ways of doing politics", he wrote.
