Authorities discuss arrest in terror plot targeting SoCal sites

BREAKING Man Who Converted to Islam Plotted Gruesome Attacks in California

Federal prosecutors unsealed a criminal complaint filed Saturday that charged Domingo with providing and trying to provide material support to terrorists.

U.S. Army veteran Mark Steven Domingo was arrested after he received what he thought was a live bomb; Trace Gallagher reports from Los Angeles.

For six weeks, Domingo plotted with the informant about murdering several "enemies", including Christians, Jews, white supremacists, LAPD police officers, even his next-door neighbor.

He is also accused of plotting to place improvised explosive devices on L.A. -area freeways, CBSLA's Dave Lopez reported.

Domingo allegedly said he wanted revenge for attacks on two mosques in Christchurch that killed 50 people last month.

The 26-year-old, who completed a four-month deployment to Afghanistan in January 2013, was finally arrested after he told the informant of his plans to attack a "white-nationalist rally" in Huntington Beach on April 27.

Prosecutors say that in online conversations with an undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation source, Domingo expressed support for a violent jihad and expressed willingness to become a martyr. He stated in posts that "America needs another Vegas event" that "would give "them a taste of the terror they gladly spread all over the world".

Watch the press conference held by United States attorneys, Federal Bureau of Investigation and LAPD in the video below. After giving the "go ahead" last Thursday, the undercover officials delivered the fake IEDs to Domingo on Friday night.

The Justice Department release said that after that post, the undercover operative began to engage Domingo in online conversations and later met him in person. According to the affidavit, Domingo knew what he was planning violated the law and he urged the FBI's source to stay quiet about his planned attack, saying what they were doing were "federal charges" and that they "broke federal law".

Domingo, who served in Afghanistan between September 2012 and January 2013, in one message posted to a private group online in early March referred to a mass shooting in Las Vegas in 2017 that left 58 dead.

News of the alleged plot comes just days after a shooter opened fire in a San Diego synagogue, killing one woman and injuring several others.

"I'm extremely glad to be announcing that we interdicted a potential terrorist attack, rather than outlining the FBI's response to yet another tragedy", said Paul Delacourt, the assistant director in charge of the FBI's LA Field Office.
