American Airlines cancels summer flights as Boeing 737 Max fears persist

American Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 sits at a boarding gate at La Guardia Airport in New York

Southwest Airlines, the largest operator of Boeing jets, announced last week that it would cancel its Max flights through August 5.

American Airlines has been forced to extend flight cancellations due to the grounding of the B737 Max until August 19.

Low-priced carrier Southwest, which unlike its rivals only flies Boeing 737s, had estimated $150 million in lost revenue between February 20 and March 31 alone due to MAX cancellations and other factors.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 remains grounded in the USA following two deadly crashes under similar circumstances within a matter of months. All 157 on board were killed.

The tweet comes as the Chicago-based company has been under huge pressure after the crashes spurred an global grounding of the fleet and launched numerous federal investigations.

The timing of a prolonged grounding could not be worse for Northern Hemisphere carriers.

The Chief Executive and President of the company said in a letter to employees and customers that they believe the plane will be recertified before that date but want to be reassured of the reliability ahead of its peak travel season.

That also meant some flights that were not scheduled to take place on a MAX plane might be cancelled because the airline aimed to affect the smallest number of customers.

American cancelled 350 flights out of Dallas-Fort Worth on Saturday, but that had nothing to do with the MAX, said spokesman Ross Feinsten. At the beginning of April, American Airlines expected its fleet of 24 MAXs to remain on the ground until the beginning of June, translating into 90 canceled flights per day.

A few days later, he called for the grounding of all Boeing 737 MAX planes in the US despite Boeing and the FAA's earlier statements of confidence in the aircraft.

To compensate, global MAX operators have added a flight or 2 to other aircrafts' daily schedules and deferred some non-essential maintenance work.

United is due to publish first-quarter results on April 16, followed by Southwest on April 25 and American on April 26.
