Wreckage of 'crashed' Japanese stealth fighter jet found

A Japanese F-35A fighter jet is missing; remaining 12 are grounded

A JASDF search team of 11 aircraft, including UH-60Js and U-125s as well as Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force ships and aircraft, began searching the area where the fighter went missing shortly after the incident.

Japan plans to procure a total of 147 F-35 fighter jets, 105 of which are expected to be F-35A.

Japan began deploying F-35As, costing over 10 billion yen ($90 million) each, in January a year ago to replace the aging F-4 fighter jet, and an F-35A squadron with 80 personnel was formed just last month at the Misawa base.

The accident could influence Switzerland's decision, but Finland could still pick the F-35 as it is close to Russian Federation, said Justin Bronk, a research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute in London.

The aircraft took off from the Misawa air base around 7 p.m. on April 9 for a combat exercise involving other fighter jets.

Reports coming from Japanese news outlets say the pilot - who has not been identified, had approximately 3,000 hours of flight time, but only about 60 of those in the F-35.

Iwaya added, "I want to express my deepest apologies for giving local residents a great deal of anxiety".

Iwaya said 12 other F-35s from the Misawa base will be grounded.

No problems with the aircraft had previously been reported, according to Japan's public broadcaster NHK. It is made by Lockheed Martin, but the crashed plane is the first to be assembled in Japan by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagoya, Japan.

The lost aircraft, assembled in Japan, cost 14 billion yen ($125.98 million), several million dollars more than one purchased directly from the United States.

The aircraft had been in the air for 28 minutes when contact was lost, the official said. But as the flight data recorder for the aircraft is in waters with a depth of about 4,900 feet (1,500 meters), recovering it will be hard at best. Oslo has taken delivery of nine of the 52 F-35s it expects to order from Lockheed, and expects to receive six more aircraft this year.

Rome-based aviation expert, pilot, and former Italian Air Force officer David Cenciotti told Fox News on Tuesday that if Russian Federation or China find the aircraft first, "it could present problems depending on what is recovered, when it is recovered and, above all, in which conditions, after impacting the surface of the water".

The crash marks only the second time an F-35 has gone down since the plane began flying nearly two decades ago. It was also the first crash of an A version of the fifth-generation fighter created to penetrate enemy defenses by evading radar detection.
