Brexit talks between Labour and Tories will continue on Tuesday

EU Council President Donald Tusk said "the deep divisions within the House of Commons" meant European leaders had little faith that the Prime Minister could strike a Brexit deal by the end of June. In reality, granting such an extension would increase the risk of a rolling series of short extensions and emergency summits, creating new cliff-edge dates. Mrs May met Mrs Merkel before flying on to Paris for talks withMacron this afternoon, where the French President will reportedly climb down from his No Deal threat but tell her Britain must leave by Christmas this year.

Merkel, briefing her parliamentary conservatives subsequently in Berlin, reportedly told them that she could imagine months of delay up to December and that an orderly Brexit, based on agreement between the European Union and Britain, was in Germany's interests.

Theresa May is on a whirlwind tour of Europe, taking in France and Germany, before tomorrow's summit to decide on an extension.

"What I think would be fantastic is if Angela Merkel will try to support a proper UK Brexit by agreeing to reopen the Withdrawal Agreement", said Andrea Leadsom, the government's business manager in the lower house of parliament, the Commons.

And he said to Labour MPs who support the Bill: "Understand the damage you are doing to this institution".

They also discussed upcoming European parliamentary elections with the PM saying that the government was working very hard to avoid the need for the United Kingdom to take part.

He said they would need assurances of "sincere co-operation" from London before granting an extension.

The draft conclusions, however, have for now left the end date of the Brexit postponement blank before national European Union diplomats discuss them later in the evening in Brussels.

And they suspect Theresa May wants them to do her dirty work for her.

On Monday evening, Parliament passed a bill brought by Labour MP Yvette Cooper, which aims to force the prime minister to request a Brexit extension rather than leave the European Union without a deal. He said the United Kingdom needed to show "substantial steps" towards resolving its political deadlock but said a no-deal Brexit would be the worst possible outcome.

One of most contentious parts of the plan is the Irish backstop - an insurance policy that aims to prevent the reinstatement of a hard border on the island of Ireland.

The EU "reiterates that there can be no opening of the Withdrawal Agreement" and that "such an extension cannot be used to start negotiations on the future relationship", according to the draft text, which can still change on Wednesday.

"The talks so far have been undertaken in a constructive manner from both sides".

Further talks will be held on Thursday.

These options could include holding another referendum on any Brexit deal agreed by Parliament.
