Nielsen's Resignation Lifts Curtain On Miller's Campaign To Stack Admin With Hardliners

Kirstjen Nielsen wasn't tough enough for Trump.

She went into a meeting with Trump at the White House in Sunday not knowing whether she'd be fired or would resign, and she ended up resigning, they said.

Trump tweeted that Nielsen "will be leaving her position, and I would like to thank her for her service". On Sunday, President Trump tweeted that McAleenan, now the commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, will take over DHS in an acting capacity.

Miller's objection to Nielsen may have been that while she was game to inflict as much punishment as legally allowable on Central American refugees who crossed the USA border, she hesitated to flout the law or tank the economy in order to fulfill the Trump agenda.

Trump also took aim at Congress in another tweet later on Sunday, saying: "Country is FULL", and saying Democrats in Congress must "fix loopholes" and repeating his threats to close the border or impose tariffs if Mexico does not do more.

Last week, Nielsen was reportedly blindsided by Trump's decision to pull the nomination of Ron Vitiello to lead the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.

Indeed, less than 24 hours after Nielsen's resignation, the short list to replace her is not very short. She was confronted by protesters previous year at a Mexican restaurant in Washington. Ms Nielsen was viewed as resistant to some of the harshest immigration measures supported by the president and his aides, particularly senior adviser Stephen Miller, both around the border and on other matters like protected status for some refugees.

Representative Bennie Thompson, the Democratic chairman of the House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee, said Nielsen's tenure at DHS "was a disaster from the start". According to the New York Times, Trump had a habit of calling Nielsen "at home early in the mornings" to demand she refuse to accept asylum petitions from Central Americans (which she could not lawfully do).

After domestic and global criticism, Trump signed an executive order in June ending family separations, but a government report last month showed that more than 200 children had been taken from their families since that time.

Mr Trump has recently threatened to shut the crossing, but has since backtracked and promised to give Mexico a year to stop drugs and migrants crossing into the US.

"I said it before, but I really fear for our democracy when the body who creates the laws is telling the body who enforces the law, 'just don't enforce the law, '" Ms. Nielsen had told Fox News last month.

She proposed an alternative plan that would slow down entries at legal ports.

The president grew frustrated with Nielsen again early this year as the number of migrants rose and as she raised legal concerns about some of Trump's more severe impulses, particularly when his demands clashed with USA immigration laws and federal court orders. She also worked as Trump's Deputy Chief of Staff.
