Samsung's Galaxy S10 5G goes on sale in South Korea

South Korea first to roll out 5G services, beating U.S. and China

Kim became the world's first 5G subscriber Wednesday at 11 p.m. when she registered her new Samsung phone. At times, it can even offer 100 times higher data speeds, cited credible sources.

Samsung Galaxy S10, first 5G phone is released on Friday (today).

The debate to claim the top position in 5G race - among South Korea's SK Telecom and rivals and United States telecom giants AT&T and Verizon will continue in the 5G space because of lack of clarity on standards.

However, the South Korean 5G services were initially available only to a few individuals selected as brand promoters, including figure skating superstar Yuna Kim, who SK Telecom announced as one of its "first customers".

The launch was announced for Friday and even preceded that of USA carrier Verizon, which also began on Wednesday to commercialize 5G service in Chicago and Minneapolis.

It is expected to bring about $565 billion in global economic benefits by 2034, according to the London-based Global System for Mobile Communications, an industry alliance. "From now on, there is a full-blown fight", he said, adding South Korea should create a variety of services, content and devices to lead the market.

Forbes reported that SK Telecom has installed 35,000 5G base stations and this will give significant coverage for Seoul.

But the implications of the new technology have pitted Washington against Beijing in an increasingly bitter standoff.

Chinese entities own a total of 3,400 5G patents - more than a third of the total, according to data analysis firm IPlytics - with 1,529 of those registered by Huawei. By the end of December, 5G will be available in 85 cities across South Korea.

Park Jung-ho, CEO of SK Telecom, talks up the operator's 5G offering on Wednesday at what SKT called the "beginning of the Age of Hyper-Innovation with 5G" at the company's 5G Launching Showcase.

5G is said to herald a new level of connectivity and speed.

Some will, no doubt, contend that the South Korean launches have already taken place, with widespread reports of 5G launches in the country on April 3.
