Less debate time for Trump picks after Senate rules change

Trump is appointing judges at a record pace. Now Mc Connell wants to move even faster

But Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., reportedly agreed Republicans will wait until after the 2020 presidential and congressional elections before considering legislation to replace the Affordable Care Act.

"What Leader McConnell, President Trump and Republicans in the Senate are trying to do is use the courts to adopt a far-right agenda that Republicans know they can not enact through the legislative process", Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said shortly before the rules change.

"We had a good conversation yesterday afternoon and I pointed out to him the Senate Republicans' view on dealing with comprehensive health care reform with a Democratic House of Representatives", McConnell told reporters Tuesday, describing his conversation with Trump.

"He did say, as he later tweeted, he accepted that and that he would be developing a plan that he would take to the American people during the 2020 campaign, and suggested that is what he would be advocating in a second term if there were a Republican Congress", he said.

Rep. Madeleine Dean said Wednesday President Trump's calls for the repeal of Obamacare was "a cruel joke".

After spending hundreds of days blocking President Barack Obama's 2016 nomination of Merrick Garland to the US Supreme Court, Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell then went "nuclear" to get Trump's first supreme court pick, Neil Gorsuch, approved. Just eight Republicans joined majority Democrats in voting to urge the administration to reverse its assault against Obamacare, as the 2010 Affordable Care Act that overhauled the US healthcare system is popularly known. He predicted Republicans would soon be known as "the party of health care", though he offered no details of a replacement.

Given the polling data, Altman and Brodie say that Trump's strategy of focusing on health care as the 2020 election heats up probably won't work, even as "it hands the Democrats a huge political opportunity".

Facing a court deadline, Trump seized on health care last week, backing a lawsuit seeking to strike down the Affordable Care Act.

The survey also showed that more than two-thirds of Republicans and Democrats said they are "not at all confident" that elected officials will be able to work together to reduce healthcare costs.

"This will be a great campaign issue", Trump continued.

On Tuesday, Democrats seized on Trump's punting of the issue until after the elections. John McCain's "no" vote that killed the repeal-and-replace effort. What happens to the tens of millions of Americans who will lose their health care? Don't worry says the president: "we're working on a plan now".

The House's non-binding resolution would also ask the Department of Justice to reverse its decision and protect the law, including provisions regarding coverage for pre-existing conditions. And it signaled that, after two years in Trump's Washington, Republicans on Capitol Hill are figuring out how to handle the president and his impulsive swerves on policy. But Thune said, "you run into that wall of reality", of a divided Congress with Democrats in control of the House, which requires bipartisanship.
