British parliament weighs forcing May into a softer Brexit

Headwinds Easy Jet has often downplayed the likely risks from Brexit

But his Cabinet colleague Liz Truss said it would be better than a soft Brexit. But a big shift by the Labour Party and other political maneuvering may change the math on Monday evening.

"They are the ones who will never forgive this generation of politicians if we allow this catastrophe to happen", he said.

Parliament will vote on different Brexit options on Monday and then May could try to bring her deal back to a vote in parliament as soon as Tuesday.

"I fear we are reaching the limits of this process in this House", May told MPs following the defeat by 344 votes to 286 on Friday. They've also failed to find a majority for any alternative.

Some allies of the prime minister are desperate for a majority of MPs to back Ken Clarke's motion to keep the United Kingdom in the customs union, at the close of round two of the Letwin process of the Commons bossing the government, Monday night.

A power vacuum has paralysed the heart of Britain's government, dismaying both the European Union and the British public.

Theresa May has been warned by one of her senior ministers that she can not afford to ignore the will of parliament if it unites around a "softer" Brexit.

Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow announces the results on Monday night.

And May hasn't given up hope of persuading Parliament to back her Brexit deal if she asks a fourth time.

The divisions within May's government over what to do next have left many Britons exasperated - including Conservative Party lawmakers.

But there is no majority in parliament for such a sharp break.

If she were to give way, she would provoke a furious reaction from Brexiteers, with International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt and Transport Secretary Chris Grayling among the ministers reportedly ready to resign.

Under the Fixed Term Parliaments Act, Mrs May needs a two-thirds majority of MPs to agree to an election but her decision to go to the polls early in 2017 saw the Conservatives lose their majority.

"It would be an act of extraordinary self-harm", a minister told VOA. May's latest threat: If her Conservative members don't rally round her deal, she will call for a general election.

British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, right, and Keir Starmer, Labour Shadow Brexit secretary, leave European Union headquarters prior to an European Union summit in Brussels, Belgium, March 21, 2019.

So too will Labour and all other opposition parties, as well as European Union leaders and journalists.

Eight motions have been proposed and the opposition Labour Party is expected to put forward its plan this morning.

But it too has sharp Brexit differences, replicating the irreconcilable difficulties the Conservative government is finding impossible to overcome. He said higher fuel costs are hitting profits and Britain's pending European Union divorce is making customers think twice before booking trips away. Meanwhile, Environment Secretary Michael Gove's political dexterity may well place him as moderate enough whilst having strong Leave credentials to draw support from across the party.

May's spokesman, James Slack, Slack rejected speculation that the government could take drastic action, such as asking Queen Elizabeth II to suspend Parliament or getting her to refuse to sign legislation.

In a odd twist, though, at least one SNP MP won't be able to back the plan on Monday, despite his party's instructions. The one thing uniting the nation is frustration bordering on contempt for the country's political class.

Over the weekend, thousands of pro-Brexit marchers descended on Westminster, protesting against the delay to Brexit day. It allows continued participation in the single market and a "comprehensive customs arrangement" with the European Union after Brexit - including a "UK say" on future European Union trade deals - would remain in place until the agreement of a wider trade deal which guarantees frictionless movement of goods and an open border in Ireland.
