Boeing MCAS Anti-Stall System Was Activated In Ethiopia Crash

The US plane maker said it couldn't comment as the investigation is still underway.

The preliminary findings could be revised, but they point to the system, called MCAS (or Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System) as the potential cause of both crashes.

Boeing is taking measures to restore confidence in its 737 MAX airplane models, following two fatal crashes that have recently prompted safety concerns.

He vowed that Garuda Indonesia did not plan to shift its order to another aircraft maker but ask Boeing to offer the airline other types of aircraft.

That represents just a small part of the nearly 400 737 Max planes that Boeing has delivered and a fraction of the 5,000 on order. "We are evaluating whether we will shift to Airbus or keep Boeing", he added.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Chicago, where Boeing is based, on behalf of the estate of Jackson Musoni, a Rwandan citizen who died on Flight 302.

After the FAA grounded all 737 MAX jets in the days following the Ethiopia crash, the manufacturer insisted it still had "full confidence" in the plane. "It is not physically easy to make large trim changes to correct, say, an MCAS input".

A man carries a piece of debris on his head at the crash site of a Nairobi-bound Ethiopian Airlines flight near Bishoftu, a town some 60 kilometres southeast of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 10 March 2019.

The figure is attributed to costs for replacement aircraft, higher fuel charges, disruption and the impact on trading following the global grounding of the planes in the wake of the Ethiopian Airlines crash which killed 157 people.

The planemaker said the anti-stall system, which is believed to have repeatedly forced the nose lower in at least one of the accidents, in Indonesia last October, would only do so once per event after sensing a problem, giving pilots more control.

After the software update is approved, it would take about a day to deploy and an hour to upgrade each aircraft.

"Should it not become clear within the coming weeks that flying the 737 MAX will resume by mid-July, TUI will need to extend the above-mentioned measures until the end of the summer season", hitting profits by another 100 million euros, it said. With investigators confirming the identical problem that appeared in the Lion Air crash past year, they can now move forward quickly with the fix.

Boeing faces a challenge of proving the Max jets are safe to fly amid suspicions that faulty sensors and software contributed to the two crashes in less than five months.
