'Captain Marvel' stays on top of global box office

'Us' Had the Biggest Opening Ever for An Original Horror Movie

Us, the much-anticipated follow-up to Get Out, has taken very little time to make a very big mark indeed.

Jordan Peele's Us now holds the record for the largest weekend for an original horror movie, garnering $70 million during its opening weekend and surpassing 2018's A Quiet Place.

The psychological thriller about a family (led by Lupita Nyong'o) confronted by a band of doppelgangers almost doubled projections, which estimated a three-day total in the US$38 million to US$45 million range.

Additionally, "Us" has also become the biggest debut for an R-rated original title ahead of 2012's "Ted", which opened to $54.4 million, while coming in second as the biggest debut of the year behind "Captain Marvel". That's not a terrific rating - Get Out got an A- - and it suggests the word of mouth on the film might not be particularly strong.

Us grossed more at its initial weekend box office than Peele's previous movie Get Out.

While Us catered to moviegoers looking for a good fright, Captain Marvel was doing some terrifying business of its own during the superhero blockbuster's third weekend of release. The tally beat analysts' estimates of US$51 million to US$54 million - and ranked the film among the highest-openings ever for a horror feature. As for Universal, the studio now has the second, third and fourth biggest openings of the year - with "Us", "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World", and "Glass".

Not only is Us being praised by critics, but audiences are going out en masse to see it. The R-rated terrorist thriller - starring Dev Patel and Armie Hammer - follows the victims and survivors of the 2008 attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in India.
