White House says pardons for Trump associates not discussed

Barr is preparing a summary of the findings of the special counsel investigating Russian election interference. The release of Barr's summary of the report's

The letter stated definitively that Mueller did not establish evidence that President Trump's team or any associates of the Trump campaign had conspired with Russia to sway the 2016 election - "despite multiple offers from Russian-affiliated individuals to assist the Trump campaign".

First thing first: The "collusion", theory, long ago exposed as a frame-up, has now been formally declared dead by even this partisan band of revenge-oriented attorneys. That part is over.

Trump has declared the findings a total vindication, but Mueller reached no conclusion on whether the president obstructed justice. Even if these proven and alleged crimes didn't involve criminal activity by Trump personally, he would seem to have a clear interest in the outcomes of these investigations, both because of his sensitivity about the idea that Russian Federation assisted him and because of the narrative it created of a president surrounded by corruption. It's curious that Barr chooses not to quote Mueller here.

"And hopefully, somebody is going to look at the other side". Saying Barr is covering up Mueller's findings is ridiculous.

During a press conference marking the release of Attorney General William Barr's summary of the Mueller report, Graham called for the appointment of a special counsel to investigate whether DOJ officials overreached in investigating Trump due to their personal and political hostility to him. "This resulted in the final determination being made by the Justice Department without providing a fuller outline of its reasoning, a fact that I expect will leave a large segment of the American people with deep concerns".

Allow me to translate. Barr makes the salient point that when a person is innocent of the underlying crime, it's pretty hard to make a case that his protestations against the investigation are an obstruction.

Barr's letter seemed likely to muffle comments like that - at least for now. It was always meant to be an obstruction trap for the president. Mueller is essentially handing the obstruction issue over to Congress, and I imagine there will be a lot of opinions there, though House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has already said she doesn't predict impeachment happening without bipartisan support.

The resolution also could deflate the hopes of Democrats in Congress and on the 2020 campaign trail that incriminating findings from Mueller would hobble the president's agenda and re-election bid. The numbers are mind-boggling. The Special Counsel therefore did not draw a conclusion - one way or the other - as to whether the examined conduct constituted obstruction. After all, every man is restricted by his mental and physical limitations, and the 22-month investigation - which consisted of 37 indictments, some 2,800 subpoenas and 500 witness interviews - were taking a toll on everyone.

"It is important to note that although the Special Counsel had a very narrow mandate to investigate possible White House-Russian collusion, the Oversight Committee, on which I serve, retains unlimited jurisdiction and may consider the available evidence beyond the collusion context", Lynch said in a statement. What a monstrous abuse of power.
