Subscription service for $9.99/month, plus Apple Card and Arcade

The company's new, expanded Apple TV app will be home to the new service, which is called Apple TV+.

Apple finally lifted the curtains on its much-anticipated reunion of Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, revealing the first footage from their new series on Monday. It also partnered with Samsung Electronics to let Samsung TV owners watch video purchased from Apple stores on Samsung sets. The company did not disclose pricing or which titles would be available at launch.

But the Silicon Valley company has a history of making quick progress when coming from behind: It launched its Apple Music streaming service years after rival Spotify Technology SA but has garnered 50 million listeners, almost half of Spotify's 96 million premium subscribers.

COMING HERE? Given the sometimes-tangled mess of regional rights to shows and movies, it's unlikely Apple would have the exact same streaming offering in Canada as it does in the U.S.

Shares in Roku, meanwhile, are up nearly 5% after the announcement that Roku is among the new distribution partner's for Apple's revamped TV app. Amazon and smart-TV makers like Samsung are also going to be getting the app.

This system is included in the all-in-one Apple TV app - the updated version of the app, that is - right now we're waiting on that update.

Apple's New Video Streaming and News Subscription Services Won't Be Cheap

Still, given the 1.4 billion iPhones, iPads and other Apple devices already in consumers' hands, it would be a mistake to write the obituary for Apple's streaming service before it launches, says Samik Chatterjee, an analyst at J.P. Morgan. Games can be downloaded and played offline - on the Apple-made iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV. The service is called the Apple Arcade.

The crowning jewel of the program, however, was when Oprah Winfrey walked on stage to announce her new Apple TV+ venture, which includes two documentaries (one a series about mental health, one about labor abuse) and a brand-new book club partnership with Apple. It's a Mastercard issued by Goldman Sachs.

The common thread is an expansion of Apple's services business, moving the company further beyond software and hardware, and a focus on privacy as a competitive advantage against Google, Facebook and other companies that rely on advertising revenue to fuel their businesses.

The Wall Street Journal has published a detailed look at what it expects to see from Apple's event, challenging some of the assumptions that had previously been reported. Apple Card will be available on all iOS devices in the Wallet app.

Apple announced the new $10 monthly subscription at an event in Cupertino, California, on Monday.

The firm also revealed a news service, Apple News+, which will include more than 300 magazine titles including Marie Claire, Vogue, New Yorker, Esquire, National Geographic and Rolling Stone.
