Apple prepares to unveil TV and news subscription services

Apple belatedly jumps into the streaming TV business

Apple is expected to announce Monday that it is launching a video service that could compete with Netflix, Amazon and cable TV itself.

For those who don't know, Apple TV streaming service will be similar to Netflix or Amazon Prime Videos, where one can watch a ton of content on the web.

Early rumours suggested some of the content will be free for Apple customers but there will definitely be a subscription model to all this.

Despite the company's insistence on keeping readers on its own products and platforms, Thompson said it has experimented on other services, highlighting content the Times developed just for Snap Inc's Snapchat app, which helped reach new, younger readers. Texture lets users subscribe to more than 200 magazines, and most of those will transfer to Apple's new service.

To ensure all attention will be on services, Apple took the rare step of announcing several new hardware products on its website last week, including upgraded AirPods, iPads and iMacs. Apple's App Store, where the service is likely to be distributed, is now available in more than 100 countries.

For the iPhone maker, which has spent the previous year neck-and-neck with Amazon and Microsoft as the most valuable business in the world, this has meant a significant slip in revenues. Meanwhile, companies including Netflix and Disney are seeing continued growth in the video streaming market.

Users can watch content on-demand on a variety of devices, from laptops to smartphones and video game consoles. One of the most exciting factors of the event is that Apple's video service that is a long-rumored concept will also be unveiled at the spring event.

Ives said he believes Apple's services business will be "worth roughly US$400 billion (RM1.62 billion) on a standalone basis".

Netflix's new mobile-only plan is still more expensive than other streaming services in India. Apple's plans here have been referred to as a kind of Netflix-for-games, but based on Bloomberg's reporting it sounds like Apple's offering will work more like Spotify. Apple could in the future sell bundled packages of subscription - for example, the pay - TV broadcaster HBO, Showtime and Starz in the USA-cheaper than the individual services. Its efforts to introduce a television service have also been well-documented; it's probably the worst-kept secret at Apple.

In the run-up to the announcement, there was some concern from publishers on how the revenue from the service would be divided up, the Wall Street Journal reported in February.
