Fil-Am mail bomb suspect pleads guilty

Cesar Sayoc, Florida man who sent pipe bombs to media, Trump critics, set to plead guilty

The Florida man who mailed pipe bombs to prominent Democrats critical of President Donald Trump pleaded guilty Thursday in a NY federal court.

Cesar Sayoc entered the plea Thursday before a federal judge in NY.

Sayoc was accused of sending rudimentary bombs - none of which detonated - to 16 targets, including former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Vice President Joe Biden, several members of Congress - including Rep.

The bombs began turning up weeks before the hotly contested midterm elections, contributing to an already tense political environment.

The 56-year-old has been held without bail in NY since his arrest on 26 October, 2018. He had been living in a van plastered with Trump stickers and images of Trump opponents with crosshairs over their faces.

His attorney had entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf in November. "I'm extremely sorry", Sayoc said.

Sayoc's guilty plea had been anticipated since his court docket showed last week that a pretrial conference scheduled for Thursday had been changed to a "plea" hearing.

The van that Cesar Sayoc drove was festooned with stickers that hailed President Donald Trump and attacked his critics.

Sayoc faces life in prison.

On Thursday, he told the judge he made objects created to look like pipe bombs and filled them with explosive powder from fireworks, fertilizer and glass shards, accompanied by wires and a digital alarm clock.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Attorneys for five people facing federal terrorism-related charges following their arrests last summer in a New Mexico compound raid said Thursday their clients are being prosecuted because they are Muslims.

"What would prevent powder from fireworks from exploding?"

The slew of charges relates to 16 package bombs Sayoc sent from a Florida post office to leading Democrats as well as the Manhattan offices of CNN.

Over several days, investigators tracked the packages to a mail center in Florida. Cory Booker and Kamala Harris; and major Democratic donors, including George Soros and Tom Steyer - and to CNN's offices in October 2018.

Similar pipe bomb packages that were en route to the Clintons and the Obamas yesterday (October 24), were intercepted in Delaware and NY on Thursday after they were sent to former Vice President Joe Biden and Robert De Niro.

Sayoc mailed 16 improvised explosive devices to 13 targets around the United States, including 11 current or former US government officials, the U.S attorney's statement says.
