US Sanctions Chinese Ships Over North Korea Sanctions

Bolton also quoted Trump as saying it was a commitment North Korean leader Kim Jong-un made several times.

The US Treasury Department also issued an updated advisory that listed 67 vessels that it said had engaged in illicit transfers of refined petroleum with North Korean tankers or were believed to have exported North Korean coal.

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said: "The United States and our like-minded partners remain committed to achieving the final, fully verified denuclearisation of North Korea and believe that the full implementation of North Korea-related UN Security Council resolutions is crucial to a successful outcome". Speaking with local media in Kansas on Tuesday, Pompeo said it's time the North Korean leader show action, considering the distrust between Washington and Pyeongyang.

Beijing said it has consistently enforced all United Nations resolutions on the DPRK after the U.S. Treasury Department added two Chinese firms to a sanctions list on Thursday. Kim Hyo-sun, Arirang News.

South Korean Vice Unification Minister Chun Hae-sung leaves after a press conference at the Unification Ministry in Seoul, South Korea, Friday, March 22, 2019. A few hours after the Treasury announcement, North Korea withdrew from a joint liaison office with South Korea that was established in September.

The Treasury Department, which oversees USA sanctions, included the Russian vessel, the Tantal, on a new list of "vessels believed to have engaged in ship-to-ship transfers with North Korean tankers".

While the liaison office was one of the main agreements reached in three summits between Moon and Kim past year, South Korean minister Chun said it was too early to say whether North Korea is renegading on the deals.

North Korea told South Korea Friday it will stop participating in the joint liaison office in the North Korean border city of Gaeseong, South Korea's Unification Ministry said.

U.S. -North Korean engagement has appeared to be in limbo since the February 27-28 summit, despite U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo saying on March 4 he was hopeful he could send a team to North Korea "in the next couple of weeks". It combined South Korean capital and technology with cheap North Korean labor.

Both Koreas want the U.S.to allow exemptions from sanctions to permit the reopening of the factory park, which provided North Korea with much-needed foreign currency.

Chun said a number of North Korean officials left the liaison office carrying documents, but most of the equipment was left behind.

However, a similar Trump-Kim summit in Hanoi earlier this month came to an early close amid disagreements concerning USA sanctions and Pyongyang's failure to denuclearize.
