Petition to revoke Brexit crashes UK Parliament's website

If MPs approve the PM's deal next week, Brexit would be delayed from 29 March until 22 May.

Whatever she hoped to achieve from her address to the nation, in which she blamed members of Parliament for the impasse in the Brexit process and told those who voted to break with the European Union she was on their side, it is unlikely she expected a slew of celebrities to urge their social media followers to oppose her plan.

Commons Speaker John Bercow has ruled that the deal put forward must be "substantially different" from what has been previously voted on, although Downing Street today said it was confident it would go to the vote. Once source said the cabinet was in "panic mode" now.

If MPs approve her deal the United Kingdom will leave under Theresa May's EU Withdrawal Agreement on 22 May, to enable Parliament to pass all the legislation needed.

But if the deal fails, London has until 12 April to come up with a new strategy.

As part of the new agreement Britain will leave the European Union on May 22 if Mrs May can get her withdrawal deal through Parliament next week, but if the deal fails again she will have to propose an alternative way forward to Brussels by April 12.

These pro-EU lawmakers will try to push through a plan next week that would give members of Parliament control of the House of Commons timetable in order to hold a series of votes on alternative forms of Brexit, to see if there is a majority for any of them.

Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, was in Brussels for talks with the EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier.

Revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU.

May has written to the EU asking for a three-month extension to the Brexit deadline but Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, said the EU would only grant such a delay if Parliament had voted for May's deal, which MPs have rejected twice.

During the leaders' discussion, Tusk shuttled between the EU-27 and May to keep the British prime minister informed and have her consent for the emerging timetable.

More than a million people have signed an online petition asking the British government to stop Brexit within 214 hours, briefly crashing the site on Thursday during a surge in support.

She added: "I think that it is important if we want to show that we can be trusted as politicians to respect a decision that we gave to the people".

May says they face a "final choice" between her deal, a no-deal departure that could hammer the economy, and cancelling Brexit.

Ms McEntee's government colleague Regina Doherty said she remained positive that a Brexit deal could be agreed during the "Flextension" period.
