Trump branded a 'conman' as ex-lawyer savages him in Congress

Michael Cohen Live Stream: Watch Ex-Trump Lawyer's House Testimony

Michael Cohen, disgraced former lawyer and "fixer" to US President Donald Trump, has delivered incendiary testimony to US Congress about Trump's business practices.

Trump, speaking at a news conference in Vietnam after failing to achieve a peace deal with North Korea's Kim Jong-un, called the blockbuster hearing back in Washington fake and said it should not have been scheduled during his trip.

Cohen said he was in Trump's office in July 2016 when Roger Stone, a self-described "dirty trickster" and longtime political adviser to Trump, called the then Republican presidential candidate.

Cohen told United States politicians on Wednesday that he had no "direct evidence" that Trump or his aides had colluded with Russian Federation to get him elected.

He said that Trump knew in advance in mid-2016 that WikiLeaks would publish emails stolen from rival Hillary Clinton's campaign by the Russians.

The 52-year-old was convicted last year by NY federal prosecutors of campaign finance violations and tax evasion and by special counsel Robert Mueller of lying to Congress about Trump Organization plans in Moscow. Cohen also said Trump implicitly directed him to lie about negotiations to build a Trump Tower in Moscow during the 2016 campaign.

It was 'pretty shameful I think, ' Trump vented.

In their letter to the Justice Department, Jordan and Meadows wrote, "Mr. Cohen's testimony is material to the Committee's assessment of Mr. Cohen's motive to monetize his former association with President Trump".

Rep. Elijah Cummings, who now heads the House Oversight Committee, has a hard time believing that Cohen was disappointed that he didn't land a position in the Trump Administration.

Cohen has already pleaded guilty to lying to Congress.

Cohen spoke about an incident when Mr Trump's son, Donald Jr, walked behind his father's desk and told him in a low voice: "The meeting is all set".

Cohen's disclosure that he's cooperating with federal prosecutors in the Southern District of NY on matters he said he couldn't discuss publicly spurred a grave tweet from Chris Christie, the former New Jersey governor and USA prosecutor: "The words that he said today that would send a chill up my spine at the White House would be, 'I am in constant contact with the Southern District'".

Perhaps most importantly, Cohen revealed that prosecutors in NY are investigating conversations that Trump or his advisers had with Cohen after the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided his hotel room and office in April 2018.

"Having a fake hearing like that and having it in the middle of this very important summit is really a bad thing".

"It was my experience that Mr. Trump inflated his total assets when it served his purposes, such as trying to be listed among the wealthiest people in Forbes, and deflated his assets to reduce his real estate taxes", Cohen said. Branding the President a "racist", Cohen recalled that Trump told him that "only black people would live that way" as they drove through a poor Chicago neighbourhood.

Cohen again raised eyebrows when he was asked whether the President compelled him to lie.

"The last time I appeared before Congress, I came to protect Mr. Trump". In two months, Cohen will begin serving a three-year prison sentence. "I am ashamed because I know what Mr. Trump is".

His testimony shed new light on how he was reimbursed for paying $130,000 to Stormy Daniels, an adult film star who said she had sex with Trump. When Democrat Elijah Cummings did not, they simply called Cohen a liar and worked to derail the proceedings by entering tweets into the record, including a tweet by Fox personality Bo Deitl, starting a ruckus over whether or not Trump is a racist, and, astonishingly, displaying a poster with Cohen's face that read: Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire.Only Republican member Justin Amash, a representative from MI, treated the event with gravity. Cohen testified that Manhattan federal prosecutors, for example, are probing other alleged crimes, with his help.

Cohen's allegation would contradict the president's assertions that he was in the dark on this issue.
