Smollett's character off 'Empire' for end of season

Jussie Smollet Empire Chicago PD

But prosecutors say it really happened. For the most part, main stream media covered this story properly, using the most valuable word 'alleged' to describe Smollett's report to the Chicago police.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tells The Associated Press that Smollett turned himself in early Thursday at central booking. We don't need any of this alleged fake nonsense. "You around to talk face to face?" prosecutors alleged. "This is an actor, you know, allegedly feigning this whole attack, trying to get more money for his salary, that's a separate conversation from what's happening in society at large and the divide that's happening in this country".

Smollett and his representatives have repeatedly denied that he staged the attack.

February 11: Police said the "limited and redacted" phone records they received from Smollett had proved insufficient for a criminal investigation.

They didn't open up to police right away. Smollett's family members were also present in the courtroom. "But unfortunately that particular camera wasn't pointed in that direction".

Later that morning, police announced that they had identified the "persons of interest in the area of the alleged attack", but noted that they were not suspects. Edward Wodnicki told reporters.

Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo asked for an attorney once in custody, Johnson said. It could also force the actor, who's black and gay, to pay for the cost of the investigation into his report of a January 29 beating.

Johnson said Smollett hasn't made any statement to police since his arrest. That cooperation is nearly certainly the main reason they haven't been charged.

Alexander believed Smollett at first too.

The actor took "advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career", Johnson said. A source told CNN that as recently as Thursday, he reiterated to the "Empire" cast and crew he was innocent of the charge against him.

"The presumption of innocence, a bedrock in the search for justice, was trampled upon at the expense of Mr. Smollett and notably, on the eve of a Mayoral election", the statement continues.

Smollett's attorneys wrote that he, like any other citizen, "enjoys the presumption of innocence" and that they meant to "mount an aggressive defense". He was ordered to give up his passport and will remain under supervision until his case is adjudicated.

Meanwhile, his legal team released as statement on social media, calling him "a young man of impeccable character and integrity who fiercely and solemnly maintains his innocence". The victim in such a case would be the police, who wasted their time investigating the phony attack.

There is plenty of real news, real crime and real victims.

"When anyone makes false claims to police, it not only diverts resources away from serious investigations but it makes it more hard for other victims of crime to come forward", Harris wrote on Twitter.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015.

"There are still some questions that we have, some answers that have to be given", she said at an event. "We are evaluating the situation and we are considering our options".

The move comes after Chicago police arrested Smollett Thursday on a felony charge that he filed a false police report and accused him of staging what Smollett claimed was a racist, homophobic attack against him last month to advance his career.

While Smollett is now facing one felony count of disorderly conduct, he may face additional charges as the Federal Bureau of Investigation has been investigating a hate threat sent to Smollett one week prior to the alleged attack. His next hearing is set for March 14.
