Tiger Woods finishes Genesis Open at Riviera tied for 15th

Justin Thomas hits a tee shot on the second hole with darkness looming during the third round of the Genesis Open at Riviera Country Club on Saturday

Tiger Woods, who started his third round - second of the day - two strokes above the cut line, fired off three birdies and one eagle in a shortened round to move into 14th place (6 under).

Weather delays wreaked havoc on the Genesis Open's schedule, and Woods didn't take the course for his third round until 6:40 p.m. ET - and Woods will be wishing that he had more daylight to work with.

The 80-time PGA TOUR victor had opened with a birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie run to send the crowds into frenzy as darkness fell.

Patrick Rodgers and JB Holmes are two shots off the lead and also facing a marathon 34-hole final day, while McIlroy and last week's runner-up Paul Casey are firmly in contention on eight under par. He drilled the putt to quickly drop to 4-under for the tournament. That run included a birdie at his final hole of the second round to fully secure himself a weekend tee time and a birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie start to Round 3. CBS' Jim Nantz lost it when Woods rolled in the birdie putt.

Woods was able to complete another three holes - all pars - before play had to be suspended due to light.

LOS ANGELES - It took him until late Saturday afternoon, but Tiger Woods finally got hot at chilly Riviera, starting the third round of the Genesis Open with five consecutive 3s, including an eagle and three birdies. The golfers will resume their third round at 6:45 a.m. Sunday, followed after a short break, then the same groups in the same order for the final round.

"I know that 1 [under] is going to get in, even par will be back and forth all afternoon".

Woods' play since his remarkable win at last August's Tour Championship has been uninspired-he went 0-4 at the Ryder Cup, finished second-to-last at the Hero World Challenge, finished T20 at the Farmers Insurance Open before the uneven performance here. "But I should have an advantage, being 25, over most of the other guys". The top 24 players qualified for the final-round match play, which consists of a series of elimination six-hole shootouts.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy improved on an opening 72 by hitting four birdies through 12 holes in his second round to move to three under. He walked gingerly, and made no secret he was looking forward to not swinging a golf club on Monday.

The tournament is set to re-start play early this morning.

"I'm going to need to be patient because I'm playing so many holes", he said, "stay in it emotionally and stay patient, see what we can do".

"I putted well", Woods said.

The Queenslander ranks first in the field for scrambling and fifth for strokes gained in putting. "It's good to get off to a good start and go home and get some rest". "They're pushing us to get through it. Give us a bag lunch and we're off".
