Veteran Actor and Oscar Nominee Albert Finney Dead at 82

Julia Roberts with Albert Finney in Erin Brockovich

Finney was a five-time Oscar nominee who began his career at the Royal Shakespeare Company before making his mark in film. His most recent-and final-onscreen performance remains the role of Kincade in 2012's James Bond film Skyfall.

"Sam Mendes has done a really great job, and I think Daniel Craig, the third time he's played the part, really fits the jacket snugly and has a nice edge to him", the actor told the MEN. His screen breakthrough came later that year in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, which rocketed him to stardom. As a young boy he was encouraged to join the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts where he studied alongside Peter O'Toole and Alan Bates.

Albert Finney enjoyed a long, decorated career that spanned decades.

Known for his roles in such films as "Tom Jones" and "Erin Brokovich", Finney was 82.

Legendary British actor Albert Finney has passed away at the age of 82, following a short illness.

His first big-screen production was 1960's The Entertainer, but playing the titular role in 1963's Tom Jones was his breakout role.

"I've always been very lazy as well as being lucky, and now I'm even lazier", Finney said.

He played in a series of smaller, independent films for a number of years before returning to prominence in 2000 as a southern lawyer in the film "Erin Brockovich", which starred Julia Roberts.

British actor Albert Finney at the Deauville Festival of American Film in France. He won for outstanding supporting actor for Erin Brockovich, and he joined his Traffic co-stars in winning for outstanding performance by a cast. However, he never attended the ceremony itself, calling it "a waste of time".

Written by Shelagh Delaney, the tale of a successful writer returning to his Manchester hometown was clearly highly personal for Finney, though it would prove to be his only directorial credit.

He also played Winston Churchill in The Gathering Storm, for which he won a Golden Globe and a Bafta, and the title role in Scrooge and Daddy Warbucks in the musical Annie.

Roles followed in Reisz's Night Must Fall and the Stanley Donen-directed Two for the Road, opposite Audrey Hepburn; Finney then turned director, with the 1968 release Charlie Bubbles.

Finney is survived by wife Pene Delmage, whom he married in 2006; earlier marriages to actresses Anouk Aimee (1970-1978) and Jane Wenham (1957-1961) ended in divorce.
