Mexican drug cartel targeting Australia

Record US meth haul intercepted by Australian authorities

More than 1.7 tons of methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin were discovered on January 11 concealed within a shipment of loud speakers on a ship at the Los Angeles/Long Beach seaport.

Video provided by the AFP shows plastic-wrapped bricks of the crystal drug being unpacked from electronic equipment and loaded into boxes.

"This is the largest seizure of ice bound for Australia ever".

A joint operation between U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Drug Enforcement Agency, Australian Federal Police and Victoria state police had stopped "a tsunami of ice" from reaching Australian shores, authorities said.

"Removing 1.7 tons of (meth) before it reaches our streets will have a huge effect on the illicit drug market", said Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission spokesman Jason Halls.

In Sydney, a 31-year-old Australian national was arrested at Hinchinbrook in the city's south-west.

Australian police have arrested six people in Victoria and New South Wales after the biggest seizure of crystal methamphetamine in United States history.

"This cartel is among one of the most powerful and violent drug trafficking syndicates in the world".

'By stopping this, we have ensured criminals will not profit from the huge pain these drugs would have caused our community. This is a serious warning.

Police said a raid in the Melbourne suburb of Woodstock in which they were arrested also found "hundreds of thousands of dollars of proceeds of crime".

Three of those arrested, including the American couple, were due to appear in a Melbourne court Friday on a charge of attempting to import controlled drugs.

In a statement Thursday, Customs and Border Protection officials confirmed almost two tons of meth were confiscated in Los Angeles last month as it was bound for Australia.

Police believe the Mexican cartel has links to Australian-based outlaw bikie gangs but would not give further detail.

Commissioner Hill said police believe Mexican cartels are targeting the country, but the identities of the cartels have not been disclosed.

A white van was searched and taken away from the scene.
