Exploding vape pen kills Texas man, medical examiner says

William Eric Brown

A Fort Worth, Texas man has been killed after an e-cigarette blew up in his face and severed a major artery as he vaped for the first time.

The Tarrant County medical examiner listed the cause of death by "penetrating trauma from exploding vaporizer pen".

His grandmother Alice Brown told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that he was weeks away from his 25th birthday and had just bought the device before the accident.

Alice Brown told the news outlet that her grandson told her he had to go to pick something up for his vehicle and stop at the bank, but that he made a pit stop to buy a vaporizer pen on the way home.

"It just all seems so unreal". "And that's what they should have taken out as soon as he got to the hospital, and they chose to wait until Monday or Tuesday".

Brown is the second person in the USA known to have died due to an exploding e-cigarette.

A staff member at the vape store has since refuted claims that William Brown ever purchasing the device from the shop, according to Dallas News.

Brown is believed to be the second person to die from a electronic cigarette explosion.

Malfunctioning e-cigarette batteries have caused hundreds to thousands of similar injuries, United States reports say.

Brown visited the store to ask for assistance in using the vape pen.

"He popped it and it exploded, and that's when it shot across his mouth", Alice Brown told the station.

St. Pete Fire Rescue Deputy Marshal Steven Lawrence told Fox, "We do have cases where the vape pens have exploded and they have caused fires". Doctors put Brown in a medically induced coma but did not operate. Additionally, the shape of e-cigarettes makes them more likely to act like "flaming rockets" if a battery fails, the USFA said. The CDC has reported that most explosions occur when the e-cigarette batteries are being charged. He was said to have suffered burns over 80% of his body.

Last May, a 38-year-old Florida man was also killed by an exploding vape pen.

A more recent study, done in part by Dennis Thombs, dean of the School of Public Health at the University of North Texas Health Science Centre, showed that e-cigarette injuries are widely underreported across the nation.

Mohamad Zayid Abdihdy was checking out a TV when his e-cigarette exploded in his trousers pocket. A Kansas man sued a Wichita vaper shop a year ago after he said the spare battery for his e-cigarette exploded in the front pocket of his trousers.
