Trump says there's a 'good chance' he'll declare national emergency

Donald Trump

Trump has agreed to open the government for three weeks, until February 15, to allow negotiations with Democrats after a 35-day partial government shutdown, the longest in United States history.

U.S. President Donald Trump is refusing to rule out the possibility of another partial government shutdown to win congressional approval of funding for a wall along the southern border with Mexico.

According to new Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings made public on Thursday night, the latest fundraising disclosures bring the total haul for Trump's re-election effort to more than $129 million, a record amount for a sitting American President at this point in the election cycle, reports The Washington Post. "The chant should be now, 'Finish the wall'". Among Republicans, it has also provoked worries about setting a precedent regarding the use of executive power that future Democratic presidents might follow when pursuing liberal goals.

"There's not going to be any wall money in the legislation, " she bluntly added, before backpedaling somewhat with the vague admission that "some new infrastructure" and more "ports of entry" in "certain localities" are still up for negotiation. The speech comes after Trump began his third year in office last month during a partial government shutdown that ended only after the president set a February 15 ultimatum to get his wall - with a threat to declare a national emergency if he is rebuffed. Polls suggest that such a move would be "wildly unpopular", and might even encourage congressional Republicans to come to a deal without him. The wall is part of a larger border security package requested by experts at the Department of Homeland Security.

"She knows that you need a barrier", he said. "It's a tremendously big money-maker for some very, very bad people", Trump said. "Human trafficking. And we're going to have a strong border". You need a wall.

The president says that existing sections of walls should be extended along the border to stop what he describes as an uncontrolled invasion of criminals. "I think you'll find it very exciting", the president said. "She doesn't mind human trafficking or she wouldn't do this", he added. "And on the 15th we have now set the table beautifully" for an emergency declaration. "And anybody that says you don't, they're just playing games".

Asked if Trump would acknowledge the shutdown in his speech, the administration official said the president will "definitely talk about immigration and about where we are in that debate and present a path forward".
