Huawei reportedly under investigation by USA for stealing trade secrets

A Seattle jury found Huawei liable in a civil lawsuit brought by T Mobile for theft of robotic tech. Now the DOJ is ready to file criminal charges

The newspaper said the DoJ was looking into allegations of theft of trade secrets from Huawei's USA business partners, including a T-Mobile robotic device used to test smartphones.

A group of United States politicians want to ban the sale of USA technology components to Huawei, ZTE Corp or other Chinese telecommunications companies that violate U.S. sanctions or export laws.

An indictment could come soon, the Journal added.

This time, however, the US Department of Justice' investigation isn't focusing on some grand national security threat but on the Huawei's repeated theft of trade secrets from US companies.

The Huawei scandal could inflame the U.S.

A Seattle jury in 2017 agreed that Huawei had misappropriated trade secrets, but determined that the actions were not "willful and malicious".

The investigation - tied to civil suits filed in Washington state, including a 2014 case involving the theft of T-Mobile US Inc. technology - ratchets up pressure on a company already reeling. Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's chief financial officer, faces fraud charges in the United States over allegedly violating US sanctions on Iran through a corporate subsidiary.

The body was responding to calls to ban China's Huawei Technologies on national security grounds because the Americans say that they are using their technology to spy for the Chinese.

Huawei is the world's biggest producer of telecommunications equipment.

American lawmakers on Wednesday introduced a bipartisan bill that would ban the export of USA components to Huawei and other Chinese telecom operators deemed to have violated American laws or sanctions.

Huawei has always been suspected of benefitting from Chinese economic espionage and the forced transfer of technologies from foreign companies doing business in China.

In 2012, congressional committees and other US government entities criticized Huawei's "pattern of disregard for the intellectual property rights of other entities and companies in the U.S".

The report comes a week after an employee of Huawei was arrested in Poland on espionage charges.

Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, in a rare public appearance this week, said his company had never received a request from a government to transmit information in violation of any regulations.

In one alleged instance, two Huawei employees slipped a third one into the testing lab to take unauthorized photos of the robot. As part of the agreement, the USA lifted a ban in place since April that prevented ZTE from buying the US components it heavily relies on to make smartphones and other devices.
