Newport knock Leicester out of FA Cup in magic third round moment

South Wales Argus

Newport County stunned Leicester City by beating the 2016 Premier League champions in third round of the Emirates FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.

The penalty came just three minutes after Rachid Ghezzal had levelled for the Foxes, who had trailed for most of the match, after Jamille Matt put Newport in the lead after 10 minutes.

Padraig Amond's 85th-minute penalty fired the Welsh side into the fourth round as 2-1 winners, after Mark Albrighton was guilty of a needless handball in the area.

"He faced a few of my penalties in training so I was hoping he wouldn't remember", Amond said.

Watford booked their spot in the fourth round after crusing to a 2-0 win over Woking. Elsewhere, QPR ended a 22-year wait to win an FA Cup tie at the first time of asking as they beat Championship leaders Leeds United, while Sheffield United went down at home to National League side Barnet.

"I think we need to be ready because I know the tradition of the cup", he told a press conference.

Sam Surridge and Callum Lang got the goals to send Claudio Ranieri's charges packing. It is one you have to savour.

He said: 'I'm probably the proudest man in Oldham.

Sheffield United began the day 84 places above Barnet but were outplayed by their lowly opponents for whom former Tottenham trainee Shaquile Coulthirst won it with a 21st-minute penalty after Richard Stearman brought down Ephron Mason-Clark. Barnet is now managed by Darren Currie, the nephew of Sheffield United great Tony Currie.

"I wouldn't say they deserved it, but they battled to the end".

This is the first time two top-flight sides have been knocked out of The FA Cup by teams from the fourth tier or below on the same day since 7 January 1989, when Middlesbrough were beaten by Grimsby (fourth tier) and Coventry City by Sutton United (non-League).

Having teed up City's victor against Liverpool on Thursday, Raheem Sterling came to the fore again at the Etihad Stadium, opening the scoring 12 minutes into Sunday's contest.
