It's onward and outward for New Horizons

Ultima Thule

This are only the first images from the probe, captured at a resolution of about 140 meters per pixel.

Nasa has revealed the first high resolution images of a snowman lingering around the far reaches of our solar system.

"That image is so 2018".

"It's only really the size of something like Washington DC and it's about as reflective as garden-variety dirt, and it's illuminated by a sun that's 1,900 times fainter than it is outside on a sunny day here on the Earth", he said.

"We were basically chasing it down in the dark at 32,000 miles per hour".

Jeff Moore, a New Horizons co-investigator from NASA's Ames Research Center, said the pair would have come together at very low speed, at maybe 2-3km/h. Before that, scientists only had a blurry image of the body and thought it was composed of two more elongated parts - resembling something more like a peanut or bowling pin.

So far, no moons or rings have been detected, and there were no obvious impact craters in the latest photos, though there were a few apparent "divots" and suggestions of hills and ridges, scientists said. The Team hopes to set a course for new objects in the near future. This image confirms that Ultima Thule (official designation (486958) 2014 MU69) is a "contact binary" object, the first one ever explored up close. The smaller, 9-mile-wide mass was given the nickname "Thule".

"It's two completely different objects that are now joined together", Alan Stern, the principal investigator for the mission, said during Wednesday's briefing. If it were spinning fast - say, one rotation every three or four hours - the two spheres would rip apart.

He added: "These are the only remaining basic building blocks in the back yard of the solar system that we can see that everything else that we live on, or receive through our telescopes, or visit with our spacecraft, were formed from". The area has hundreds of thousands of objects that could hold the keys to understanding the beginning of our solar system. As NASA announced well in advance of the flyby, it's going to take months for the spacecraft to send its trickle of information back to Earth, and sciences will surely be eager to get their hands on it. "The data we have look fantastic and we're already learning about Ultima from up close".

Another round of imagery and data was received today and will be the focus of a news conference on Thursday.

NASA shared a graphic showing how an object like Ultima Thule forms: "as a rotating cloud of small, icy bodies started to combine".

In response to a reporter's question, Stern addressed the controversy head-on.

Carly Howett, another researcher of the mission, noted that "we can definitely say that Ultima Thule is red", perhaps due to irradiation of ice.
