Home alone and isolated, Donald Trump stands ground on border wall

President Donald Trump answers questions from the media after speaking with members of the military by video conference on Christmas Day Tuesday Dec. 25 2018 in the Oval Office of the White House

Trump praised existing construction of replacement walls on the Southern border, promising to visit the site in January.

He's seen enough to know this shutdown brings "unnecessary stress", he said in an interview with ABC News.

The president spoke to reporters after calling the troops from the White House on Christmas Day.

More than 400,000 federal employees deemed "essential" are expected to continue to work through the shutdown, to ensure that critical operations in government proceed.

Trump's comments come as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Republicans need to "abandon" border wall funding if they want the government to reopen, just less than 24 hours into the partial shutdown. The new Congress-in which the Democrats will control the House of Representatives-is set to take effect in the new year, which will provide a new barrier for Trump.

He also accused the Democrats of not supporting his demand for funds for a border wall because he had focussed on it during his presidential campaign and pushed for it in the White House.

President Donald Trump and Democratic leaders traded barbs - but few proposals that would fund nine Cabinet agencies and a handful of smaller federal offices - over the long Christmas weekend. But Trump's public comments and tweets - including a reference to "shutdown money", which lit up social media but sowed new confusion - only added new murkiness to the talks.

People walk up the steps even though the National Archives is closed with the partial government shutdown in Washington.

Schumer on Monday denounced the White House for sending mixed messages. "At some point, the Democrats not wanting to make a deal will cost our Country more than the Border Wall we are all talking about".

The impasse over government funding began last week, when the Senate approved a bipartisan deal keeping government open into February. We are not going to let that take place. He was supposed to spend Christmas at Mar-a-Lago with FLOTUS Melania Trump and their whole family but apparently, he can not join them due to the government problems that he needs to solve.

The stalemate over how much to spend and how to spend it caused the partial government shutdown that began Saturday following a lapse in funding for departments and agencies that make up about 25 percent of the government.

Some 800,000 federal workers must either work without pay for the time being, or stay home and wait to be paid later.

One union representing federal workers slammed Trump's claim. "It's stressful for staff, it's stressful for inmates, and the government shutdown and not knowing if you're going to get a paycheck in a couple of weeks is an unneeded stress", he said.
