CBP orders medical checks after second child's death

Border official announces changes after 2 migrant children die in US custody

An 8-year-old Guatemalan boy has died while in custody of the USA border control on Christmas Day.

On Monday, the boy and his father were taken to the Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo, New Mexico, after a border patrol agent observed that the boy was sick.

The boy was given amoxicillin and Ibuprofen for a cold and a fever and released by the hospital, but he returned later in the evening with worsening symptoms. He was readmitted to the hospital and died there hours later.

Earlier this week, the body of 7-year-old Jakelin Caal, who died earlier this month, was returned to her village in Guatemala for burial.

The Trump administration said Caal's death showed the danger of her journey and the family's decision to cross the border illegally. The girl began vomiting during a bus transfer to Lordsburg Border Patrol Station.

Many of them say their goal is to settle in the United States despite warnings by U.S. officials that anyone found entering the country illegally will face arrest, prosecution and deportation.

Her death provoked scathing criticism of immigration authorities by Democrats, who said the death was a result of President Trump's "cruel and inhumane" immigration agenda.

Her death marked another flashpoint in the debate over the White House's hard-line approach to immigration enforcement, with many - including Jakelin's family - wondering if better medical care may have saved her.

It is the second time this month an immigrant child has died while being detained after crossing the US-Mexico border.

The boy arrived in El Paso with his father December 18 and was transferred to the Alamogordo CBP station on Sunday, according to the statement.

The father and son were not identified, and the agency statement said it will release more details "as available and appropriate".

Her death on December 8 prompted calls for investigation from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, which says "disturbing systematic failures" and a lack of medically trained agents prevented the government from adequately caring for its child.

Both were taken to a hospital in New Mexico.

The child had seizures and a fever, and was flown to the hospital, where she went into cardiac arrest and died. It was not immediately known if the watchdog would open an investigation.
