US Government Partially Shuts Down Over Border Wall Deadlock

This is the third time US federal funding has lapsed this year although the other two were brief

Republican and Democratic senators had this week reached a deal on short-term funding legislation that did not include the $5 billion Trump wants, but the president said on Thursday he would not sign it.

Netizens were closely following Trump's tweets on a probable shutdown, and after the Senate ultimately failed to arrive at a compromise over a House-approved bill, prompting a closure, internet users, including journalists and political pundits, took to Twitter to have their say. Chuck Schumer of NY, said in a statement that Trump "threw a temper tantrum and convinced House Republicans to push our nation into a destructive Trump Shutdown in the middle of the holiday season". "The shutdown hopefully will not last long".

"Call it a Democrat shutdown, call it whatever you want".

Looking for a way past the stalemate, Mr Trump said he would accept money for a "steel slat barrier" complete with spikes on top, which the leader said would be as effective as his promised wall while being "at the same time beautiful".

Trump's efforts to do that this week were undermined by his own comments during a televised argument with Schumer in the White House on December 11.

Mr Trump had said any impending shutdown could last "a very long time" as he blamed Democrats over the failure to agree a deal on spending.

With several senators not yet back in Washington, Vice President Mike Pence cast the tie-breaking vote for the Senate to begin consideration of the House bill that provides more than $5 billion for a border wall.

Democratic senator Brian Schatz flew all the way home to Hawaii, tweeting that he spent 17 minutes with his family, before returning on the 11-hour flight.

With negotiations expected to resume, the House and Senate scheduled rare Saturday sessions. "I'll be the one to shut it down". But workers who fit certain exemptions have to report to work during government shutdowns.

The remaining three-quarters of the government, including the Defense Department, Departments of Labor and Health and Human Services, were already funded and won't be affected by the shutdown.

Trump had made clear last week that he would not blame Democrats for any closure. -Mexican border to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking a key campaign promise in the 2016 election, when he said it would be paid for by Mexico. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, who expressed disappointment at the lack of a deal, and Lamar Alexander of Tennessee.

In a joint statement released overnight, both lawmakers pointed their fingers at the commander in chief for what they dubbed "the Trump Government Shutdown".

Mr Trump then dug his heels in over the issue after criticism from conservative talk show hosts and other allies, and insisted that funds for the wall must be included for him to sign the budget off. At first, GOP leaders in the chamber struggled to muster enough support for the House plan to move forward. Such critical workers, including United States border agents, and nonessential employees would not get paid until the dispute ends.

Looking for a way to claim victory, Trump said he would accept money for a "Steel Slat Barrier" with spikes on the top, which he said would be just as effective as a "wall" and "at the same time attractive".

But there was no breakthrough, and at midnight, the lights began going off at some agencies, including many national parks and museums.

More than half of the 1,700 people who work for the executive office of the president would be "furloughed", meaning they would be put on temporary leave.
