Trump Lashes Out as House Struggles with Avoiding Shutdown

US President Donald Trump says he won't sign off the funding approved to keep government running because it doesn't include money for a US-Mexico border wall

The Senate approved legislation Wednesday to temporarily fund the government, a key step toward averting a federal shutdown after US President Donald Trump backed off his demand for money for a border wall with Mexico.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says the Senate will vote on the bill Wednesday.

The Democrats are a party of con artists and fear mongers, but President Trump is no fool.

The problem, critics say, is that if a border wall deal isn't struck now, it may have no chance of passing in the next Congress, when Democrats control the House.

Congress faces a Friday midnight deadline for averting a partial shutdown of the federal government because they can not agree a spending plan.

Should a short-term resolution be reached, the border funding fight would be punted to the new year and the next Congress, which could prove even more hard for Trump with a Democratic-led House. He had promised to begin working on an "impenetrable physical wall" along the southern border on his first day in office, but little headway has been made.

That would force Trump to actually veto the measure. "The way you create leverage is [you] keep this issue alive and keep arguing why we need to secure the border".

Several GOP senators said that even if the House passed additional funding for border security, it could not pass the Senate, where votes are needed from Democrats to advance it.

Susan Collins of ME heard that Trump was refusing to sign a Senate bill that lacked funding for a border wall, she "almost dropped her handbag".

The US Postal Service, busy delivering packages for the holiday season, would not be affected by any government shutdown because it's an independent agency. Maybe. But the House Freedom Caucus is still demanding immediate border wall funding, no matter how they get it. HFC Chairman Mark Meadows was releasing this statement just as the Senate was voting on the stopgap bill.

And that puts Trump in a precarious position going up against attacks from at least thirty Democratic contenders, and potentially several Republican insurgents, all seeking the presidential nomination.

Meantime, Trump administration officials were looking for ways to build the wall, which the president initially had pledged Mexico would pay for, by reassigning money already doled out to US agencies for other projects.

"He must have a trick up his sleeve because I can't imagine he would just walk away from it", Bennett said.

The bill, passed by voice vote Wednesday night, would keep government agencies open by extending current funding through February 8.

The rejected spending bill did not provide for Trump's specific border wall vision, instead offering $1.3 billion for border security and fencing, according to WTOP.

Pressing the case Thursday on Fox News, Meadows said: "A lot of people are very nervous this morning about whether the president will cave or not".

The White House has not provided details of that effort but leading Democrats have warned that shifting funds around in such a way would have to be approved by Congress.

Trump's move may have been influenced by virulent criticism from far-right lawmakers, some of whom have publicly called on the Republican president to stick to his guns on wall funding.

Ryan (R-Wisconsin) has repeatedly caved to opposition from Democrats on the funding of the wall.

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway hinted earlier that Trump is leaning this way when she told reporters at the White House the President will "take a look at" the continuing resolution, though she attempted to frame any punt as something other than a concession from the White House.
