Trump Signals He’s Ready to Back Down in Border Wall Fight

White House closer to partial shutdown with wall demand

The Senate prepared to vote Wednesday to avert a federal shutdown and keep the government funded into February after U.S. President Donald Trump backed off his demand for money for a border wall with Mexico.

"He refuses to change his vocabulary", host John King said, mocking the president's tweets that the wall -now described as "artistically designed steel slats"- would be paid for by Mexico through Trump's yet-to-be-approved USMCA trade deal.

As Axios's Stef Kight noted, "This is a much softer stance than President Trump's statement last week when he claimed he was "proud to shut down the government" over the border wall". But that outcome is not assured and is not the same as his campaign promise that Mexico would pay for the wall, which the country has refused to do. Democratic congressional leaders, Schumer and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, have proposed no more than $1.6 billion, as outlined in a bipartisan Senate bill.

The Senate's top Republican and Democratic leaders began negotiating new proposals, and talks were expected to continue.

Despite aides signaling an impending concession on the border wall, the President outwardly insisted Wednesday that the wall will be built "one way or the other". "He has a responsibility to keep the government moving forward and he has responsibility to get border security". Democrats also offered to simply keep funding at its current level, $1.3 billion.

Despite his willingness for a shutdown fight over border security prior to the midterm elections, Trump conceded to Republicans leaders House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell who wanted to postpone the fight until after the election.

Democratic Rep. Nita Lowey of NY, who will take over as Appropriations Committee chairwoman, said she was disappointed that Trump and the Republican Congress "couldn't even complete their final task of funding the government" and instead chose to "kick the can down the road for a third time". Schumer called McConnell to reject it.

"He is not going to get the wall in any form", Schumer said.

The stopgap measure would approve government funding at existing levels for the next several weeks, without a boost for the border.

President Donald Trump followed his Tuesday morning meltdown with Wednesday morning lies and what sounded like a nod to civil war.

"We have other ways that we can get to that $5 billion", Sanders said on Fox News.

"I think even Ann Coulter and the biggest supporters back during the campaign will say an "artistically designed wall with attractive slats" is not what they expected when the president was chanting at rallies 'build the wall, '" she said.

Asked if that meant having a government shutdown, he said: "If it comes to it, absolutely".

About one-quarter of the government would be affected, including the departments of Homeland Security, Transportation, Agriculture, State and Justice, as well as national parks.
